More than 44,000 people are planning to fast on November 6, but that's not just because it's fast Sunday.

As Tuesday, November 8—Election Day—approaches, some Mormons and members of other faiths are turning to Facebook to participate in an invitation to participate in the nationwide fast event.

According to the event's Facebook page, participants can fast or pray for the benefit of the country.

"With the Election coming up, I suggest that as a nation we fast for our country. Try to fast at anytime that you can on this day. If you can't on this day, do so on another day. Fast for inspiration on who to vote for. Fast for Peace. If for whatever reason you can't fast, just pray. Invite everyone.
If you don't know how to fast this is how I fast: Start with a prayer. Prayerfully abstain from food and water for two meals. End with a prayer."

The private Facebook event, hosted by Sarah Land, is set to last all day from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
