Winds topple LDS church steeple in New Zealand

The first cruise ship of the season arrived in the capital to heavy rain and winds strong enough to knock the steeple off a local church.

The 16-metre-high steeple at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hataitai was pushed over far enough for a 20-centimetre gap to appear between the 50-year-old monument and its foundation.

Church leader Bishop Quintin Howard said he arrived at the church yesterday to discover the steeple listing badly, having presumably been pushed aside by gale-force northerlies.

"It was tilted on an angle a bit like the Leaning Tower of Pisa," he said.

The Fire Service was called in to help and eventually a crane was used to bring it down safely.
