Most people know Joseph Smith saw Jesus Christ on earth, but did you know other prophets and apostles have also seen our Savior? Here are just a few such accounts:
1. President George F. Richards
In the April 1974 general conference, President Spencer W. Kimball shared a story about President George F. Richards seeing Christ in a dream. President Kimball said President Richards shared it “more than once” in meetings. In President Richard’s dream, he was in the Savior’s presence and, although Jesus Christ didn’t say anything, it left a deep, lasting impression on President Richards. “I was in the presence of my Savior as he stood mid-air. He spoke no word to me, but my love for him was such that I have not words to explain. I know that no mortal man can love the Lord as I experienced that love for the Savior unless God reveals it to him," President Richards said.
2. President Lorenzo Snow
When Allie Young was a young girl, she used to visit her grandfather, President Lorenzo Snow, in his office in the temple. At that time, family members were allowed to visit temple presidents in their offices. One night, while walking Allie out of the temple, President Snow suddenly stopped Allie in the hallway and told her about his heavenly experience in the temple. “It was right here that the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to me at the time of the death of President Woodruff," President Snow told Allie. "He instructed me to go right ahead and reorganize the First Presidency of the Church at once and not wait as had been done after the death of the previous presidents and that I was to succeed President Woodruff [as President of the Church].”
3. President George Q. Cannon
Joseph Dean recorded George Q. Cannon’s testimony of seeing Christ in the Salt Lake Temple. At first, President Cannon began with bearing his testimony. He asserted he had “seen [Jesus Christ's] face and heard His voice.” Dean then recorded that President Cannon remained silent until he was able to regain control of his emotions, after which he testified of God and said he had both seen His face and heard His voice as well (George Q Cannon: A Biography by Davis Bitton pg. 415).
4. Elder Orson F. Whitney
Elder Orson F. Whitney told the story of his dream about Gethsemane at the MIA Jubilee Conference in 1925. He said he saw the Savior “as plainly as I see this congregation” and watched as the events of Christ praying in the garden played out. He watched as the apostles fell asleep and Christ awoke them, and then saw Him after the Crucifixion as a resurrected being. He begged Christ to allow him to follow Him but was asked to stay on earth to finish his work: “It was so vivid, so real, that I felt the very warmth of His bosom against which I rested. Then He said: ‘No, my son; these have finished their work, and they may go with me, but you must stay and finish yours.’” Whitney told the Savior, “Well, promise me that I will come to You at the last.” The Savior lovingly replied, “That will depend entirely upon yourself.”
5. Oliver Cowdery
6. The Prophet Joseph Smith
Most Latter-day Saints know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ visited Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove in 1820, but many might not know the Savior appeared to Joseph many times later in his life.
In 1836, after the dedication of the Kirkland temple, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were praying on the first floor of the temple. The curtains dropped around the pulpit area and they saw the Lord at the pulpit. Of the Savior, Joseph wrote, "His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah" (D&C 110:3). Christ said He accepted the temple and many people would be richly blessed because of the ordinances available.
In 1831, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon moved to Ohio to work on Joseph's translation of the Bible. During the time they worked on the translation of the Gospel of John, they realized many truths regarding salvation had been lost. About six months after arriving in Ohio, the two saw a vision of God and Jesus Christ in the Celestial Kingdom and the other degrees of glory. This vision is now recorded as D&C 76.
