Mom of missionary killed in New Mexico car accident bears powerful witness at her son’s funeral

Elder Mike Davis was one of the two young missionaries who were killed in a July 22 car accident on the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. At Davis’s funeral on Friday, July 30, his mother, Kim Davis bore a powerful witness of the reality of the plan of salvation as she issued an invitation to those listening.

“I want you to walk with me for just a minute. I want us to walk out of the valley of the shadow of death where we can get caught up in the sadness and the feelings of all the things we’re going to miss. . . . I want you to walk with me up to the top of the mountain.

“I know you’ve all been to the top of a mountain and what do you see? It’s beautiful and you can see so far out in front of you and it’s amazing. That’s where I’ve been. I’ve been sitting at the top of a mountain because I love my Father in Heaven’s plan. It is a beautiful plan and I don’t understand but . . . I know Mike is working hard and he is joyful and happy. And we have a lot of work to do to make sure we end up where he is.”

Kim shared the powerful experience her family had as they gathered together around Mike’s body four days after he passed.

“He looked so beautiful,” she said. “He had a big old shiner on his eye, but he looked like he just got done playing football. He just looked beautiful. Brian and I cried and were able to kiss him and hold him, and then we had all his brothers and sisters come in. I’ll tell you what, that was the perfect moment.”

She concluded by sharing that it was the gospel of Jesus Christ that brought her happiness amid heartbreaking circumstances, and she invited others to learn more.

“If any of you are wondering or doubting or trying to figure out how to be happy, you call the missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because they have a message that will make you happy, and you will be happily together with your family for eternity. That’s what I count on.”
