Wall Street Journal: Mormon Missionaries Turn to Facebook, Twitter

A 200-year-old Mormon rite of passage is about to get a modern makeover: starting this year, missionary work will involve a lot more wall-to-wall than door-to-door proselytizing, as missionaries for the first time formally embrace Facebook asFB -0.36% part of their sacred duties.

Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve officially announced this summer that missionaries will use Facebook, blogs, emails and text messages to spread the church’s message. Over time, missionaries will also begin to use digital devices like iPads to share the gospel.
