[00:00:00] As All In comes to a close over the next two weeks, I wanna make sure you know two things. First, these episodes aren't going anywhere. Every conversation we've had on All In will stay right here so that you can revisit your favorites and listen to episodes you may have missed over the years. Second, this isn't the end of conversations like the ones we've had on this show.
The team at Deseret Book is working on something new, and while I can't tell you much yet, I can tell you that it is being made by people who care about the same things you love about this show. Honest, heartfelt conversations that strengthen faith in Jesus Christ, the kind you've come to expect from All In.
So please stay subscribed here and continue to follow All In on Instagram so that you can hear the latest about this upcoming show first. If you've ever listened to this show, you've heard me thank Derek Campbell of Mix at 6 Studios. And if you're like some of my friends, you've wondered, who is this Derek guy?
Well, ladies and gentlemen, in a special surprise bonus episode, I am honored to introduce you to the guy who has been endlessly patient with me over the last eight years, and whose talents have made this show sound great week after week. Derek Campbell is a seasoned audio professional with over a decade of experience in various fields.
As the lead audio engineer, music composer, and mixer at Mix at 6 Studios, Derek has composed music for major corporations and award-winning podcasts, and his mixing and mastering skills have helped propel numerous podcasts, including this one, to success.
This is All In, an LDS Living podcast where we ask the question: what does it really mean to be all in the gospel of Jesus Christ? I'm Morgan Pearson, and I am so honored to have my dear friend, Derek Campbell, on the line with me today. Derek, welcome. Thank you so much. What a time to be alive where we can do this, huh?
Derek, I probably was about to already get emotional, which is embarrassing, because I realize that's probably the last time I'll ever say that. Really? Yeah, you're right. It, it- I'm done. This is it. This is it. And- My goodness ... it feels pretty fitting. Well, I'm honored. Honestly, I'm, I'm honored to be here, and I, and I never thought in a million years that I would be in this whole thing.
And we'll, we'll talk some more about, about our history, but this is such a cool experience to be a part of. And so to be interviewed, it's an honor, and I just, I appreciate a lot, so thank you. Well, I, uh, told Derek that I have, I've gotten some requests over the years because people are like, "Who is this guy that you reference in the extro?"
And I have a one dear friend in particular, shout out Dane, who's always like, "When are you gonna talk to Derek on the podcast, because I gotta know who this guy is." So I, I wanna start, [00:03:00] Derek, because I will say this, I want people to know that from the time you first came into this, which we had recorded a handful of episodes before you started doing sound for us, and as soon as you came into it, it was like something changed.
And I mean that as, like, the highest compliment, um, because of the spirit that I feel like you brought into the interviews, and you brought your testimony into the interviews. And so for me personally, Derek, your being a part of All In has meant a ton to me. And I think when we did the interviews in person, it was obviously, like, the spirit that you brought into the room with you.
But even since we've transitioned to doing stuff remotely, I think just having a second set of ears that I knew was listening and could make sure that I didn't sound dumb has meant a ton to me. And so I wanna start out, you, from what I understand, you getting the job to work on All In was kind of an answer to your prayers, if I remember correctly.
So can you remind me what the situation was for you and your family at that time? And how the opportunity to work on, it was not just All In, it was This Is The Gospel as well, how that kind of came at the perfect time for you? Yeah. Well, well, first off, thank you. That was the sweetest thing. You... Being in those, those first initial recordings that you and I both did were so special because it was like we were both kind of trying to feel the waters a bit and getting into things.
But I appreciate that a lot, and, and I felt the spirit as well during that whole thing. Anyway, to the question. In 2016, this is kind of where the story starts, so I'm working at the church as a music composer and an audio engineer, and I'm doing from, music from, like, interstitial stuff to podcasts for the church.
I was doing all the audio work for at the time it was called the Mormon Channel. And at the Mormon Channel, I was doing okay and, and, you know, financially I was doing all right, but my wife had to work as well to get the home that we were about to move into. So we were really excited about that, we were really excited about, about, you know, moving into a new home.
And I was doing some freelance projects on the side- I got a call from a, a coworker actually at the church and, and she said, "Hey, I've got this new project. It's actually for Timeout for Women for LDS Living, and I need an audio guy. Would you be willing to come and run audio for us?" And of course I'm like, "Yeah, of course.
Let's go do it. This is for a film, a little short film. Let's go do it," right? So [00:06:00] I decided that, like, this is kind of, kinda where I'm gonna be for a long while. I'm gonna be working at the church doing some freelance projects. My wife Kelly's gonna work. So at that production I met a couple people, but the main person I met that was the producer of the whole thing was, was Corinne Leigh, who was a producer at LDS Living.
At the time she was a part of the Timeout for Women team for LDS Living. And so I gave her my card and I said, "Hey, if you need any audio work, let me know." And so we did the, we did the, the spot. We did the, the filming. It went really well, and I went on with my life. She went on with her life. We, we really didn't talk at that point from that point forward, right?
So fast-forward two years later, we're moved into our home and things are getting a little wishy-washy I guess. We're, we're struggling a bit financially, and so my wife Kelly had to quit her job because our youngest son got really sick and started developing a lot of things that, that really was, was unfortunate and we had to deal with it.
And so Kelly's like, "I'm gonna quit my job. I'm gonna go do this thing." So we, we were honestly struggling to the point where we needed to sell the home that we just bought and that we just built. So we put the house on the market, and it was on the house for the market for, like, maybe two months and we had no hits, no viewings, no showings, nothing.
And one day we were, we were both kinda kicking ourselves like, "What are we even doing? We love this home. We don't wanna sell it, but we still need to do it 'cause we can't afford it." So one morning my... You know, I went to work and my wife called me and she says, "Hey, our realtor told us that we have tons of showings, like, in the next, like, couple days."
And then we're like, "Whoa, whoa. Like, this is awesome. This is great." And she said, "I don't know why, but I feel like we need to pull the house off the market." And I'm like, "Well, we have showings. How are you gonna pull it off the market? This is a huge deal. Like, why, why would you do that?" So that was just such a, such a, like a, "I, I'm not sure where we're going with this, but if you feel the prompting we need to do it, let's do it."
So we at that point decided to pull it off the market and, uh, tell our realtor, "Hey, we're gonna, we're gonna do this." And she was like, "What? We have showings. What are you doing?" So we decided to put our faith forward and we just went along the day and I got this phone call. I was working, went to voicemail, and it was Corinne Leigh.
And she's like, "Hey, Derek, I don't know if you remember me, but I wanted to see if you're still doing audio work and I'd like to bring you in to possibly work on some podcasts for us." Now, once again, we are, [00:09:00] we are not doing well financially. My wife quit her job. So Massive, uh, answer to a prayer that... And honestly, I'm, I'm grateful that, that we got that phone call because that kickstarted really everything from that point forward.
I came in and after, you know, after we talked for a little bit, me and Corinne, she's like, "By the way, I never keep cards, and for, for some reason, for the last two years, I've kept your card on my little..." It's her little corkboard that she had right above her desk. So I guess that's kind of the history of it, and then that's where I met you, and we started talking about All In.
But honestly, that, that whole entire situation changed my life forever. And so what we've done here is a huge part of why, why this is all so, I guess, important to me, because it really changed the trajectory of our life for the better. And so it was an answer to a prayer. It was, it was everything. Anyway, it was just...
That's, that's all that happened there. Well, I think the thing that's cool is, like, you hear that phrase, timing is everything. Yeah. And that is, I think, the reason timing is everything is because that's the way that God works. He's orchestrating all of these little details so that things align at the right time.
And so I'm grateful that Corrine kept your card. I wanted to ask you one more thing before we get into, like, memories of this podcast and what's meant something to both of us. But you recently told me, Derek, that you were inactive before your mission, inactive in the church. Tell me, like, how did you come back to the church?
Good question. So yeah, this, this is a interesting story. So when I was younger, my family was inactive for a lot of my childhood. We went to church here and there. W- I grew up in Utah, and we went to church here and there, but really, it was, it was a really low attendance of church in general. And so I really didn't have a lot of care in the church.
I didn't have a testimony. I didn't really... My mom always told me it was like he cared about the fumes, the car fumes and the perfumes. And so we just really didn't... I didn't, I didn't have a huge priority in the church at all. My, my friends all went, and they all invited me, but I'm like, "Nah, I'm, I'm busy.
I've got, I've got a job. I've got a job. I've got, I've got things going on." And so throughout my life, I've had little things happen to me, I guess, where I've always known the church has kind of been in the background, but I've always, I've always known this, at one point in my life, I'm probably gonna revisit that part of my life.
So when I was about 18, I met some friends, [00:12:00] and those friends had friends, and so I met those friends, and things were going really good, and I eventually got a girlfriend within the group that I was in, and it kind of- It, it went great. It was fine, you know, but I knew that at the end of the day that this was not gonna last that long.
And so after that situation happened and it, and it ended, I had this really strong moment. Uh, I didn't really know what I was doing with my life at the time. I was like, "Do I go to college? Do I go, you know, off to the military?" I don't know. I, I don't even know what I was thinking, honestly. I was like, "Where do I go from here?"
So I felt like I was hitting a rock bottom because it, it pained me to not know where I was going next. So I, I started to think, "What the heck am I gonna do with my life?" And for the first time, I think in probably ever, I said a prayer. I was like, I remember my mom kneeling at her bedside every night saying prayers.
Even though we weren't that active, she always prayed. She never faltered on that. And so I remembered her praying, and it kinda gave me this idea of like, maybe I should give this a shot again. So I said a prayer, and I, I just had a full-on conversation, like a two-hour conversation with Heavenly Father.
It was so crazy. I was like, "This is just, like, wild." I, I couldn't, I couldn't even like... It was a, it was a very out-of-body experience where I was like, "Is this really happening?" Like, I felt just so many things coming in, into my heart, like, like, okay, this is making sense now. He's actually talking to me.
Everything that I've been, I've been taught when I was younger actually makes sense now. Oh, my gosh, like, if I start ha- putting faith in things, it will start to work out. So I did something that I learned in the very small fragmented moments of seminary. And that is, I took the Book of Mormon, and I put my fingers on top, and I said a prayer, and I flip it open, and hopefully the answer would be there.
It's a very common thing. And I was like, okay, maybe I'll give that a shot too while I'm during this, this prayer. So I did that, flipped it open, and in there it was talking about the Nephites, Lamanites. I had no idea where it was, and I still don't know where it was. I think it's somewhere in, in, in 1 or 2 Nephi.
But regardless, the Lamanites and the Nephites were fighting, and the thought came to me, "Which side are you gonna be on?" I knew enough to know that the Nephites were, at the time, at least in that part of the Book of Mormon, were good, and the Nephites... or sorry, the Lamanites were not so good. So I was like, "Which..."
I had this prompting, "Which side are you gonna be on?" So I At that point, that's when it all kinda hit. I'm like, "Oh my gosh, it's time. It's time to come back." And it was like a spiritual two by four hit me right in the face, and I was like, "This is it. I'm, I'm, I'm coming back." And so I started to meet [00:15:00] with my bishop and started to get things going, the process moving.
At the time, the girl that I was dating, her best friend was Kelly, my wife, and Kelly was planning going on her mission at the same time as I was. So as I was, as I was, you know, getting all this stuff, I, I, I talked with Kelly, who was preparing to go on her mission, and I was like, "Oh, maybe, maybe that's what I should do, too.
Maybe this is where I go. Maybe this is what I need to do. This is the answer I've been looking for." So I decided, yeah, let's go on a mission. Let's do this. I started reading my scriptures, started getting involved in church, and she and I, we went to mission prep together, and it was just awesome. It was like, it was like the best scenario possible.
And eventually we started dating and, and now we're married. That's kind of the, kind of the, the, the deeper story, obviously. But at the end of the day, that's, that's really how it all started. That's how it all ended, and from that, it's just been, it's been smooth sailing in the gospel. That's a lie, by the way.
But I, but I, but it's ... I've never lost that testimony that I gained at that time, where I prayed, and it all came to me strong. And I, I ... At, at that point, I kinda felt like Joseph, where he says, "I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it." And that is where, that's where the s- the strength of my testimony came from.
Went on a mission, and then, you know, life continued. So that is, that is the, the story of how it all happened. And here we are. And here we are. Okay, so now that we've gotten the history of Derek Campbell and the church, I wondered how has working on this podcast strengthened your testimony? Hmm. Yes. It has.
I will tell you that much from the get-go. It has very much strengthened my testimony. So the how, though, it's, it's, it's interesting because I've done a lot of audio work from all kinds of different places in my life, and by far, this podcast has strengthened my testimony further than any other podcast I've ever worked on.
And- When I edit this podcast, there's many times where I'll just be dealing with something in my life, right? It could be something as simple as I have this question that I've always been, that I've been pondering for a long time, or my... something with my family, my, my kids, my wife, whatever it is. And no joke, almost...
It's like, it's like tender mercy central here for, for this podcast. Whenever I, I start editing, it's like, oh my gosh, that's exactly the answer I needed right now. Like, it's so crazy. Like, one of my favorites, when I was editing Michael Houston's episode, it was talking about lament and lamenting, and I'm like, I was go- My wife and [00:18:00] I were going through some, some moments and, and it was like we wanna, we wanna strengthen our testimony, we wanna do better at the church, but, like, I feel like the lamenting was, like, the, the answer that we needed.
I don't know why, but it was so influential, and I was like, "This is crazy." Like, I didn't, I didn't expect that to really answer any question that I had, but it did, and that happens time and time again, and I feel like that, those tender mercies that have happened throughout this entire time that we've done this is a testimony builder in itself.
It's like it just created this new better version of Derek that I never thought I could ever be, and, and I think that's, that's the how. Like, it, it, it really just created this new, new thing in me where I was like, this is how I gain my sp- Like, this is like, this is, like, my, my personal study, but it was so much cooler 'cause it's like I get, I get to hear these stories.
And that's the other thing, too, is that without this podcast, I wouldn't be able to meet the people that we have. And, and I know we're gonna talk more about the history, but my goodness, the people that we've met and interviewed and, and, and, and created these, these amazing stories with, like- How can you not be influenced by it?
How can you not have something change in your heart by it? And, and that's, that's been such a blessing to me and my family, so. Yeah, I think it's, uh, it's interesting because I don't know that I've felt as much that, like, certain episodes were exactly what I needed to hear, but I do feel like the way that this show has strengthened my testimony is the way that I've seen Heavenly Father make up for my inadequacies.
Exhibit A is I am, like, just not, and you know this, Derek, I am not the most organized person. And- I'm not gonna say that live on our podcast ... but it's, but it's true. Um, and I think that it's been neat to see the way that, like, there have been so many times where we've had an episode and then I realize that when I plan to run it aligns perfectly with some, like, holiday or I...
My favorite example is Rebecca Hershey. Do you remember that one? I believe so, yeah, yeah. So she, her daughter had reached out to me on Instagram, and I remember reading her daughter's message and thinking, "That sounds really interesting." She, she didn't say that she was Rebecca Hershey's daughter in her message.
She just said, "I know this woman. She has cancer," and she said that she's run the Boston Marathon with- Yeah ... cancer, and I was like- Yeah ... man, wow, amazing. Yeah. You know? I remember that very well. And then, and I, and I had every intention of reaching out, but then I didn't, and, like, [00:21:00] probably two months later I thought, "Oh, I probably should still reach out to that girl," and I did, and at that point, Rebecca Hershey was on hospice after battling cancer for years.
Right. And as a result of, like, timing, again, it's that idea, like timing is everything, you know? But because of that- I was able to interview Rebecca Hershey. The doctor had given her, like, two months to live, I think. And she didn't end up making it, like, a month. And so- Oh, you have things to say, Jane? Daddy.
Oh, uh-huh. Um, but she didn't end, she didn't end up making it to the end of the year, if I remember correctly. And then by the time her episode aired, her... She had already passed away, and her family got to hear their mom- Yeah ... again in an interview they'd never heard, and that was the first time that they had ever heard it.
And I have thought so many times, like, that is just, it's just crazy the way that the Lord works. So I, I think that's, that's probably the biggest way that I feel like it's strengthened my testimony is seeing the way that the Lord has made up for the things that I lack. Derek, do you have a favorite memory or memories from the last eight years working on this show?
I- Also, I should tell people listening. Yeah. Derek and I are recording this, this at night. Yes. My kids are supposed to be in bed. My husband is not home. He's, uh, away on a work trip, and my almost two-year-old is p- now part of this interview. Yep. But I texted Beej, Derek, and I was like, "This is what this interview currently looks like."
And he was like, "It feels kind of, like, oddly sentimental that that's the way that this is ending." It really does. No, it's great. So here we are. I love it. I love it. It is as authentic as it gets. That's right. Um, but yes, Derek, your favorite memory/memories. Right. Yes. So, so I've got a few, if you don't mind.
I'm not gonna, like, speed through them, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna kind of list... I had a li- I actually created a list for this. So one of my favorites that we went to together was Ardeth Kapp. What a gem of a human being she was. My goodness. I remember we went, we went to her house, and we When we arrived, I remember, like, I, I was wearing, like, I, I don't know, I was wearing, like, a bomber jacket.
She's like, "That's such a nice jacket." I'm like, "Thank you so much." And she's like, "Oh, you have glasses. Can I give you, like, a bundle of glasses cleaners?" And I'm like Sure. Like, thank you so much, I've been [00:24:00] needing those. And she gave them to me, and I threw them in my jacket pocket. She's like, "What a perfect place to put them."
And so, and just, I mean, just the joy that we had recording her was just, like, absolute, absolute, like, one of the, one of the best moments, 'cause it was just so wholesome. It was so sweet. It was so, so great. Walking, walking into Ardith Cap's house is like walking into a temple, I feel like. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Totally. Like, the, the purest spirit you could ever feel. And just, just all the memorabilia she had on the walls of her and her husband, and just, just the feeling that was in there was, like, this is a... This is h- it was, it was sacred, hallowed ground, wasn't it? Yeah. It was just like this... But she just brought this spirit of happiness that you can, like, you can never just bypass or discount.
It was so good. So Ardith was so sweet. And, uh, let's see. So, and then Kate Holbrook was such a sweet interview as well. And- Another one in her house. It was another one in her house as well. Yeah, we, we don't do... We didn't do too many house visits, but when we did, they were always so special. And, uh, Kate's was so sweet because it was just...
That was similar to Ardith, funny enough, where it was hallowed ground there, too. And just salt of the earth kind of person that I don't think I'll ever meet in my entire life again. Uh, another one would be actually- Really, really quick. Yeah, please, please. Really quick about Kate Holbrook's interview.
Yeah. I think, if I remember correctly, we at the time did not know that her cancer was back. And so Kate Holbrook had cancer in her eyes, um, that ultimately led to her passing away. Yeah. And it's interesting, both of those women that you mentioned, Ardith and Kate, were, like, such a gift, I think, to the church, and their names, like, should forever be remembered for- Yeah
for the contribution that they made to the church. But I think Kate, so we were in Kate's basement, and it was getting dark. Yes. And do you remember they never turned on lights? Yeah, it was dark. And it, uh, like, as the sun was setting, it was getting darker and darker. Yeah. And I was kinda like, "What?" Like, "This is kinda odd," you know?
But come to find out, the reason was her eyes were, like, sensitive to light. To light, yeah. And I had no idea. Yeah. And so, anyway, it's just so interesting to see the way, like, people give everything that they have. Like, Kate, that was her continuing to give everything that she had- Right ... to try to just make that interview happen.
And yeah, and it was, it was so, it was just- It was so evident that she cared more about just being there and, and letting her story be told and, and just kinda give, I, I mean, honestly, if we can, we can be real here, like a, a last blessing that she could give to the rest of us, and it was. That episode was, is definitely in my top, [00:27:00] my, my, my Mount Rushmore of episodes.
So that was an amazing one. Kate Holbrook, and then you had another one you were going to. Yes. Yeah. I, I, I, I, I do have... Yes, so Mark and Leanne Hope. What a riot that was. We were at the, we were at the Elias Living green room, and that is actually the room where we started our entire journey. And so we were in there, and I just remember, like, Mark was just, like, I mean, six feet off the table and laughing and yelling.
It was just a riot the entire time. And I just remember, I was trying to... See, as the audio engineer, you d- you have to do your best not to engage in everything, even if it's funny, even if it's sad. Like, I... You can't hear me cr- Like, if you heard me crying in the middle of a recording, it'd be terrible, right?
It'd be like, "Well, who's that random guy, like, sobbing in the background?" That's not a good sign, you know, as an audio engineer. I had to restrict my laughter so much where I, like, my stomach was hurting. Like, it was just so intense and so good, but absolutely a top one. I, I also love that one. Yeah. And one thing that I remember about it is that Mark and Leanne had gotten married, like, a little bit older.
Yes. And at the time, I was single, so they, they, like, stayed by the elevator chatting with me about, like, dating for ever, it felt like. And they acted like they had nowhere better to be, and I was like, "You guys are good people." They're good people. All right. So Mark and Leanne, so great. And then did you have other ones, too?
Yes. So another obvious choice, I, I don't mean to say it like that in, in, in a bad way, but Elder Bednar, Elder David Bednar. That was such an experience. You and I went to the church office building, and we... It was just you, me, and him, and it was, like, the most intimate tight conversation ever. It was a pretty decent-sized room too.
I remember, if you remember, it was just me, you, and him, and it was just this moment where, like, I mean, the Spirit was so thick you could cut it. Like, it was crazy. And, uh, and that was just such an amazing experience to be a part of that, to be able to meet him, and to, and to go through that conversation.
It was such a great thing. Uh- Do you remember also how he, like, stayed chatting with us for a long time- Oh, yeah ... afterward? Oh, yeah. I, I think- Hi ... that's one thing I'm always so impressed by is people that are just like, "I don't have anything better to do than- Yeah ... to talk to you," when you're like, "I know you're Elder Bednar.
You have one million-" He has so much to do, and he stayed with us, and it was so perfect. And then I would say... I'm sorry, I have, I had so many, I had to write them down. But, uh, Eric and Leslie Dyches, um, that one we actually went to a, there was a conference room in the building. [00:30:00] And, uh, I actually know Leslie personally because she was in my ward when her husband, her original husband passed away.
And so it was such a, a sweet moment to be able to re- be reunited with that part of my life and to, to kind of see how she's been doing and to see her, her husband, her new husband, and how just amazing they are. Such a power couple. Such a, such an amazing experience that was. It was during COVID too, during COVID times, so we both had, we all had masks on.
That was very strange, but we, it was one of the few that we did during COVID in person, but we felt like we needed to do that one in person as well. And the last one was actually Sister Susan Porter, and that one was such a, a huge, a huge Spirit-filled one as well. We went to the church office building again, and she answered so many questions I've had about how to raise my children in the gospel.
And it was like I, I didn't expect the answers, but they just came anyway. And the Spirit that she brought and, and just how incredible that interview was just was unforgettable. So those are my favorites. There's plenty others that were incredible, but if I were to take some of the greatest ones, at least some of my favorite ones, the Mount Rushmore of it all, those would be it, I think.
Okay, another question for you. Yeah. What do you think that you will carry most with you from this experience? Ooh, that's a good question I think for me is that Heavenly Father loves me enough to put me in this place to do this with you. We, we have met a lot of amazing people, and I've been able to hear firsthand the stories of these people every week for, for eight years, and it's just...
I'm a very lucky person and a very blessed person to be a part of the whole thing. It's like Heavenly Father just inserted me right into the right spot, and it, and it really created this, this deeper appreciation for how much He really loves me, but also all of us, honestly. 'Cause every all and answer that's been asked has really brought me further and further into the gospel and brought me closer to Heavenly Father more than anything.
And so for me that's, that's a huge blessing that I'll take with me forever because... A- a- and these memories that we've created and, and been a part of, and everybody that's ever been on the show really has, has done something to my soul. So I just get to carry it with me more, and I just, I'm thankful to my Heavenly Father for putting me in this place, that I get to hear this and, and do this with you.
It's been such an amazing journey. Well, I think that is one of the reasons, Derek, that you are so great, and one of the reasons that you have brought so much to this show is because you do recognize that Heavenly Father is the reason that we're both here. [00:33:00] And I think neither one of us have tried to take that for granted.
I don't think either one of us thinks that we're anything special. I hope you've never felt that from me. Um- No, I, you and I feel like are just, we are just small little vessels that just kinda do and be and operate, and that's it. That's, that's really all I felt that we were, and we're just giving a way for people, sometimes even the most normal People have some of the greatest stories, and we've been able to see that in real time, and that's such a cool thing to be a part of.
And yeah, we're... Like, and I, I don't mean to speak on your behalf, but I think you agree with me, is that we are just little pawns in this whole entire thing. And just to be a part of it is just such a, such an honor and a blessing. Like, it's, it's been absolutely incredible. Yeah. It's funny you say that about, like, normal people because that was something that was very intentional throughout, was like, we wanted to interview people that people would know, people that people would be interested in.
But it was also like, okay, how do we mix in all of these other people that have incredible stories? And it's funny, Derek, I'll tell you this, and I guess this will probably give people, like, a little sneak peek, but, uh, so I have these last eight episodes that I've recorded, and I've gone back and forth and forwards and backwards about who should be the last episode, which feels like it's putting way too much pressure on something.
But there's this one interview that I did that is just with this normal family, and I think that they'll be the last interview because to me, that is what All In has always been about, is, like, that's what's made it special, is that we've been able to highlight people and the fact that everybody has a story.
And I think, Derek, like, you're a great example. Us talking about these experiences that you've had in doing this... Are you trying to show them Daniel Tiger? Yeah. That's so nice. Um- Yeah ... these experiences that you've had in doing this show, I think that shows that again, is like, we're all just people that are trying- What's that?
people that are trying to live the gospel and- Margaret. Um, and we all have a story, every one of us
Okay. All right. Derek Campbell Yes ... after listening to hundreds of people answer this question, I'm gonna make you answer it Oh, great And that is, what does it mean to you to be all in the gospel of Jesus Christ? You know, I had, I had a slight feeling that you'd ask me this question. I'm not sure how. I'm not sure.
I, I haven't really heard that question before, but thanks for asking. So [00:36:00] sometimes people are like, "That is such a good question." I'm like, "And I did not come up with it." You know, I have, I have actually thought about this, doing all this, like what, what would I have ever be asked, and I, I didn't ever think that I would be, and I was okay with it.
But the fact that it's being asked, it's kind of like this, this moment of like, holy cow, here we are, like this is it, you know? But in my life right now
My testimony has gone up and down for definitely the last eight years, right, that we've been doing this. I've had ups, I've had downs, and at the end of the day, I've realized a lot about how the Lord works with each one of us. And my wife and I have talked about this quite a bit, and it's kind of become our, our mantra for the last little bit is we need, we need to learn and, and embrace the gospel line upon line, precept upon precept.
We, we will, we'll just say it back and forth, line upon line, precept upon precept, right? And it's actually funny enough, and I, I don't like to share this. It-- you know, I, I wanna be very, very careful sharing this, but in my patriarchal blessing, it actually mentions that as well. So it's a very important phrase in my life.
Being all in is not about just shoving the fire hose of the gospel down your mouth and being like, "Let's do this," right? "The whole thing, let's, let's, let's, let's get it drained and well, let's, let's, let's ingest the entire gospel at the same time." It's meant to be drip fed, and that's, that's really what we need to do as, as disciples is learn every single day and choose every single day our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, every day, because that is going to bring us closer than any other possible way.
It's not gonna be a one-day experience where you just... Like I said, the, the fire hose analogy, it's gotta be drip fed. And there's no greater joy than the last couple months where my wife and I have really come back. We've, we've had quite a spiritual rebirth recently. And I feel like we've had a couple of those, but this has been the biggest one.
We're a temple-going family. We're a, we're a, a sacrament-taking family. We're a church-going family. We're a studious family in the gospel, and that's the first time I feel like I can say all of that in the same sentence, and that's, that has not been that way my whole life. And If you don't mind, I wanna read a scripture, my favorite scripture of all time.
I'd love it Hold please. Gotta get it. I'm gonna say it. I wanna say it perfectly. I have it memorized, but I'm like, I'm not gonna leave this one up to chance Now, this is a scripture [00:39:00] mastery, so all those that have, have gone through seminary know this one pretty well, too. But this is my favorite scripture of all time.
So Mosiah chapter 3, verse 19. "For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father."
And that scripture means the most to me because that is something that I've, I've had to always do, remember, and practice in order to finally feel the spirit that I've always been missing. And so to be all in means to just put the Lord first and, and, and always put him above everything else, because that's what's gonna make your life 10 times better.
And I'm, I'm a testament of that, that, that he's, he's given me, so yeah. I love that, and I love... We've said this many times, but there's, uh, it- it's crazy to me that we've asked that question so many times, and no two answers have ever been the same. But I love what you said, Derek, about line upon line, and the drip line, I've never thought of it that way.
But it kind of is like that idea of daily bread. Mm. To me, I, I actually just told Benjamin the other day, I said, "I feel like the Lord gives me just enough right now to get me through the day." And then it's like, okay, wake up and do it again the next day. And I think that's the way that it's intended to be.
That's what keeps us coming back to the Lord over and over and over again. Like you said, it's not a one-time thing. We're intended to have an ongoing relationship with him, and I think that has been something that I will miss about doing this show. But I think that that is, that's one thing that I will miss about doing this show, is that it has given me Like a little spiritual boost every week, and also has, like, held me accountable for trying to be the kind of disciple of Jesus Christ that I would like to be.
And so now I will have to find some other way to be better. But Derek, I want you to know how much I appreciate you and Kelly. You both make such a great team, and it has just been such a blessing for me to get to [00:42:00] work with you. And I should publicly say that I appreciate your patience with me. Oh. You mean the world to us, too.
You, you, you, you've blessed our life more than you already know. So thank you for letting me tag along these, these little experiences that we've both been able to, to witness. I, I really appreciate it, and I, I know Kelly and I both are, are, are grateful for everything that's happened, and we're excited for you and your family to go off into the sun- no, I'm kidding.
But, like, but to just, to continue and, and, and I know that you'll, you'll be incredible at anything you do in life, and I'm just ... I'm grateful to all the listeners, too. I want to be very clear that everybody that's listened to the show and been a part of this, I hope you know that your testimony, too, has helped strengthen our testimony.
Your prayers and everything, we've felt it. So thank you so much for listening to the show and keeping us on, on, on this train together. So all the, all the reviews, all the comments, they all mean so much to us, so thank you to everyone here. Thanks, Derek. Thank you, Morgan.
We are so grateful to Derek Campbell of Mix at Six Studios for his work on this episode, as well as being our guest. We are so grateful to you for listening, and we'll be back with you again one last time next week
