BYU’s Vocal Point to compete in NBC’s ‘The Sing-Off’

BYU’s Vocal Point will be competing in season three of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” which returns Monday, Sept. 19, 8-10 p.m. ET.

Vocal Point, an all-male group in BYU’s School of Music, has been Brigham Young University’s premiere contemporary a cappella ensemble for the last 20 years. Their nine-man vocal firepower continually invigorates audiences and entertains fans with inventive arrangements, humor and remarkable vocal percussion.

The group performs for over 50,000 people each year, regularly selling out shows weeks in advance, and performs for sold-out crowds on and off campus. They are one of 18 performing groups sponsored by the university, and although they devote 20 hours of time to the group each week, they do not receive scholarships or compensation for their time.

Dave Boyce, who founded Vocal Point along with former member Bob Ahlander, said of the group: “When we created Vocal Point, we envisioned a group that would become a tradition at BYU. We are so happy and proud of what Vocal Point has become.  It has exceeded our expectations.  In fact, we often joke that we wouldn't make into the group if we auditioned today.”

In addition to Vocal Point, 15 other groups will be competing on “The Sing-Off” for the $200,000 cash prize and Sony Music recording contract.

“The Sing-Off” will be hosted by singer Nick Lachey and judged by artists Sara Bareilles (“Love Song” and “King of Anything”), Ben Folds (Ben Folds Five) and Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men).
