At the recent dedication of the Logan institute building, Elder Gérald Caussé of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles encouraged attendees to continually seek greater spiritual knowledge. He taught that, more than a mere intellectual exercise, the search for truth is “one of life’s most sacred and meaningful experiences.”
Here are four pieces of advice that Elder Caussé offered.
1. Remember That Spiritual Knowledge Comes Through the Spirit to Our Heart as Well as to Our Mind
“While intellectual or scientific discoveries can at times bring you comfort or even strengthen your testimonies, spiritual knowledge cannot be proven by logic or always measured by tangible means. You have been given the gift of the Holy Ghost. Use it freely and faithfully. The Lord will open new horizons of understanding to you.”
2. Let Your Spiritual Learning Be Driven by a Sense of Awe and Wonder, Not Doubt
“Approach the gospel with the same reverence and joy as does a lover of art who enters a museum, someone who delights in the beauty of the masterpiece and the genius of the artist rather than focusing on the cracks in the canvas or the dim lighting in the room.”
3. Don’t Over-Complicate the Gospel
“All through history, when people began rejecting simple truth in favor of something more complicated, they started to lose their way. In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Jacob warned against those who despise the words of plainness and looked beyond the mark.”
4. Be Wise in Choosing Your Sources of Information
“To navigate safely, we must turn to sources that are trustworthy, uplifting, and guided by the spirit, such as the scriptures, living prophets, worthy parents and spouses, righteous friends, and personal revelation through prayer and reflection. Good sources can become for you an oasis as you encounter deserts of deception on your life’s journey.”
Enjoy the Endless Feast
Because the glory of God is intelligence, we have the ability to receive a portion of His glory through continual learning. Even when you feel that you’ve hit the limits of your intellect, Elder Caussé assures that there is always more.
“There will always be new feelings to experience, new ideas to ponder, new joys to discover,” he says. “The gospel is like a rich and endless feast. And as we all know, yesterday’s meal can’t satisfy today’s hunger. … Keep seeking truth every day. Keep a lifelong thirst for learning, both spiritual and secular, that strengthens your faith and brings you closer to the Savior.”
