For anyone considering senior missionary service, did you know there is a search portal on the Church’s website where you can see what mission opportunities are available to senior missionaries? And senior missionaries can include opportunity preferences as part of their missionary application—so these listings can be exciting as couples and sisters consider opportunities or locations they might enjoy. Think of it as a job board for senior missionaries.
For example the Church has a “critical-priority” senior service missionary opportunity for a Spanish-speaking couple to serve as the Recreational Properties Director at the Juma Bonao Recreation Camp in the Dominican Republic Santiago Mission.
If you have experience working in healthcare as an MD, DO, RN, NP, or PA, the Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mission has a “critical” need for a Mission Health Adviser.
And the Papua New Guinea Port Moresby Mission also has a “critical” need for an English-speaking Church Communications Specialist who can help build positive relationships between the Church and local government leaders, interfaith groups, and the media.
For each opportunity listed on the Church’s website, members can see a short description, language requirements, desired skills or experience, access to medical facilities, and who to contact for further questions about the opportunity. And since senior missionaries are also responsible for their own mission expenses, a breakdown of roughly how much the mission will cost per month is also listed.
Examples of opportunities for senior missionary service
At the time of this article’s publication, there are 139 different “critical” senior missionary opportunities listed. Of those, 22 are in missions within the United States, and many involve less-specialized work such as supporting mission office logistics or assisting local members and leaders.
Other opportunities—of all levels of priority—include requests for senior missionaries to assist with construction, property, and building maintenance; family history work; Church Educational System needs; military relations; storehouses and canneries; self-reliance projects; humanitarian aid, and much more.
As you search for senior missionary service opportunities on the Church’s website, you can filter your search by:
- Priority need
- Monthly cost
- Country or geographic region of preference
- Length of service
- Housing
- Assignment types (Church History, Legal Support, Health Care Professionals, Humanitarian, Seminaries and Institutes, Temples, etc.)
- Access to medical facilities
- Language
If you are open to a variety of opportunities, senior missionaries can also specify their preference for a certain geographic region or assignment type as part of their application process. But keep in mind that the Church’s Senior Missionary FAQ page also states, “While your preferences are carefully considered by the Brethren and assignments may be made accordingly, please be willing to serve wherever you are assigned.”
In a recent Church News story, Sister Sandy England, who is blind, testified of the blessings she and her husband experienced while they served in the New Mexico Farmington Mission.
“You just do it,” England said. “It’s remarkable how you are blessed on your mission. People think we are joking, but I am not. You are blessed by going on a mission.”
