‘Spiritual’ is not a characteristic one would think of to describe a football player and his coach on a Division One national college team. Yet ‘spiritual’ is the word that popped into my head as I sat in the audience of the devotional given by the BYU football team Friday, October 18th prior to their game against the University of Houston the next day. These brawny young men walked into the chapel with the confidence of gladiators, but at the same time had the humility of true disciples of Jesus Christ. I was impressed with their clean-cut appearance with matching tan pants and navy blazers sporting BYU’s ‘Y’ logo patch. For the opening hymn, it was an amazing site to hear them sing “Onward Christian Soldiers” as that is exactly what I envisioned them to be.
