But if you had your GPS and could see it all from above, adjusting your perspective to a mile, to five miles, to 50 miles, to the whole distance from where you are to where you want to go, you could then make all the right turns along the way. The plan of salvation is the big picture, the big map that shows the destination, and the restored gospel is the clearly marked path. And the gospel GPS is so advanced that it allows for U-turns and course corrections so long as we don’t turn it off or tune it out. And like a buddy-tracking application, it also allows us to locate the position of our children and to coordinate the journeys so that we all end up at the same place.

This afternoon, March 17th, 42 wonderful missionaries arrived by chartered bus at the Kobe Mission Home after a 7 hour bus ride from the Tokyo Mission. They have all been reassigned to Kobe for an undetermined period of time.

I have had the privilege of serving as a psychiatrist for forty years. They were years when psychiatrists did both medications and therapy, so I knew my patients more intimately than I knew my friends. During thirty-five of those years, I often took care of missionaries who needed psychiatric help in the Washington, DC, North and South missions. It was interesting to see the variety of personalities in the missionaries I met, and I learned that the Lord needs many kinds of missionaries to teach the many kinds of people that walk the earth.

For most of American history, voters wanted their president to be white, Protestant and male. But such prejudices have eroded — dramatically, in some cases. The last Democratic presidential primary contest was between an African-American and a woman — two groups that many voters once ruled out for the presidency. While a sizable share of voters still would refuse to support any gay or atheist candidate for president, those numbers also have dropped significantly, according to the most recent Gallup poll on the subject. But in a trend that may prove troubling to Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, nearly one-fifth of voters surveyed nationwide told Gallup last year that they would not support a Mormon for president — about the same as when Romney's father, George, ran for president more than four decades ago.
