Four members of a prominent Provo family were killed when their plane crashed in Missouri Friday morning, and members of their community and the LDS congregation the father presided over as a bishop are mourning the loss.

Throughout history, the Lord has tried His chosen people by requiring them to make significant sacrifices. Though the sacrifices required of us today for the building of temples are very different from those required by the Saints in the early days of the Church, we are still blessed with opportunities to contribute and serve. Here are a few stories of children and youth who made their own contributions for the construction of the house of the Lord.

Earlier this year, 17-year-old Abigail Manery was crowned the 2017 Idaho Miss Amazing Teen Queen. She is currently preparing to compete at the National Miss Amazing Pageant, which will take place this August in Chicago, Illinois. Abby will be featured in an upcoming documentary highlighting her preparations for the pageant, as well as her life and the disabilities she lives with daily.

What if I told you about a singles ward that recently had a 3-hour Sub-for-Santa auction and raised over $41,000? What if I told you that they spent another 3 hours of shopping for 150 families and Walmart had to dedicate 6 lanes just to their ward for all of the Christmas gifts they had purchased for those families?

When General Conference rolled around last October, I realized that it was the weekend that my children were scheduled to spend all day Saturday with their father. I felt somewhat ambivalent about this. On the one hand, I looked forward to a day of actually getting to hear the talks and ponder them in quiet peace without the stress of trying to help three small children sit through eight hours of talks in a somewhat reverent manner. On the other hand, I do take seriously the counsel to watch and listen to Conference and to encourage participation from our children. During the past decade since becoming a parent I have sought to make General Conference a significant family tradition. I’ve tried special foods, coloring packets, bingo, key words, going for scenic drives, and, most commonly, just requiring children to be in the room doing something quiet and not bothering me. I don’t remember watching Conference much as a child, but I don’t fault my mother for this at all.

The Church recently released a new story book app designed to "entertain curious minds and busy fingers with uplifting, interactive tales." With this app, kids can brush up on their reading skills, play interactive games that build enthusiasm for learning, and gain a deeper understanding of gospel values.

"There were so many things that I was able to learn on my mission that helped me when I started going back to Church, and helped build my testimony,” Isaac Asiata said. “I will carry those things with me for the rest of my life.”
