Following are some more responses to a recent question from one of our readers, Len. She asked: I’m Jewish, and I know this might seem like a weird question, but I can’t stop thinking about it: Why do all of the Mormons that I know seem so happy? So genuinely, positively happy? Why do their personal lives seem so fulfilled? Even the Mormon missionaries that I see on the street seem so warm and kind and are always smiling. I really don’t understand how they can be that way 24/7. Is it just an act? Or is it real? I know that Mormons struggle too (everyone has bad days), but I’m really puzzled to see an entire group of people emanating joy, success, and happiness. Here are some more responses (and thanks to those who have shared their thoughts in comments).

During his seven-year NFL career in San Francisco, Tom Holmoe played on three Super Bowl championship teams and later earned a fourth ring as an assistant coach with the 49ers. He was also a member of the BYU squad that pulled off an incredible comeback victory against Southern Methodist University in the 1980 Holiday Bowl. As thrilling, dramatic and blissful as those accomplishments were, they just don’t compare to another life-changing event that transpired in 1988: Holmoe’s decision to become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Urim and Thummim consists of two seer stones or interpreters used by selected prophets throughout the ages. In ancient Israel the stones were part of the breastplate worn by the high priest of the Aaronic Priesthood. According to lds.org, the Urim and Thummim is “an instrument prepared of God to assist man in obtaining revelation from the Lord and in translating languages.” The website also states that the name Urim and Thummim is Hebrew for “lights and perfections” and that “there is more than one Urim and Thummim, but we are informed that Joseph Smith had the one used by the brother of Jared” (See D&C 17:1).
