When I was growing up in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, Church books were a big thing in our house. We lived in Oklahoma, so there weren’t many other Mormons, and there wasn’t an Internet, so we didn’t have Blogs, Facebook, or Amazon. Books from Deseret and Bookcraft, and inspirational tapes from Covenant, were one of our main sources of connection to the mother ship.
In the past 12 months, President Russell M. Nelson and the senior leadership have changed the way Church members worship on Sundays, how they minister to one another, how priesthood quorums are organized, how missionaries begin their service and interact with their families, and how the Church’s name should be used. They’ve also introduced changes that affect every auxiliary organization in the Church.
The Mormon Women Project recently published a podcast with Julie Bradshaw Grygla. Julie didn't always want to be a mother, but now she has six kids all under the age of five. When Julie's triplet boys were just five months old, she found out she was pregnant with twins. Just four months after her twins were born, God told her she'd be having one more. Julie shares what it's like, how she got here, and how she relies on God and the Spirit to get through this crazy adventure. You can listen to the podcast here or read the whole story here. We've included a sneak peek below.
There was real weight embedded in a light moment between Presidents Russell M. Nelson and M. Russell Ballard as the Latter-day Saint leaders wrapped up a news conference in March.
Mormon singer/songwriter Hilary Weeks always runs on her treadmill with her clicker in hand.
Daniel Smith from Messages of Christ recently created a video explaining the symbolism of the Tabernacle of Moses using a detailed replica built by the Murrieta and Huntington Beach Stakes for their 2016 Tabernacle Youth Camp. This video demonstrates how each part of this sacred structure was designed to help others think of our Savior and God, and many similarities can be seen behind the Tabernacle of Moses and our temples today.
Even when he was a young surgeon, Dr. Nelson’s operating room was calm and orderly and had an attitude of respect for everyone in the room. “Things can go wrong in a hurry in the operating room,” he explained, “particularly if you’re working with circuits and connectors and things where an aorta can blow apart in front of your eyes, or the tubing can split open. You’ve got to be ready to make instant decisions and take instant actions. The only way you can do that is to demand absolute control over your emotions. Absolute control. I learned this the hard way.”
It's a given that thank-you cards should be sent when people come to your wedding and give you gifts. But the exact manner in which this should be done seems cluttered by a lot of rules and sometimes debate. I've seen some that are monogrammed in sealed envelopes and others that are just postcards, some with photos and some not. Some mention the gift (and some mention the wrong gift), and some add a personal note while others are more formulaic. What's okay and what's not? You tell me.
MR says: God does answer prayers--usually in unexpected ways. Check out this incredible story of how an Argentinian woman came to accept the gospel.
Elder David A. Bednar recently issued a challenge to members of the church during a landmark address on the topic of social media at BYU’s annual Education Week. “I exhort you to sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth—messages that are authentic, edifying, and praiseworthy—and literally to sweep the earth as with a flood.”
