Over the election season, we have been following internet evangelist Bill Keller's "Vote for Jesus" campaign where Christians pledge to write in Jesus Christ for president on November 6. Earlier this week, we reported that over 1 million had signed a pledge signalling their commitment to "Vote for Jesus" because, in Keller's words, this year's Republican and Democratic presidential choices are like "satan flipping a two-headed coin with his head on both sides." It appears that not all Christians are happy about the Jesus for president campaign.
How unthinkable it was, not so long ago, that a presidential election would pit a candidate fathered by an African against another condemned as un-Christian. Yet here it is: Barack Obama versus Mitt Romney, an African-American and a white Mormon, representatives of two groups and that have endured oppression to carve out a place in the United States.
New York Post columnist Maureen Callahan recently tried to explain to her readers the ecclesiastical implications for Mitt and Ann Romney and their activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints if the family ends up living in the White House. Callahan cited several sources in her column, although there is nothing officially from the LDS Church. Too bad. Even if she had just gone to the church's Newsroom website, specifically prepared as a media resource, she might have avoided some glaring misrepresentations of LDS Church doctrine, policy, practice and procedure.
Arriving by bus, train and plane, thousands of Mormons from across the country canceled their church plans one Sunday to help with Sandy relief. One of those volunteers, Joshua Brown, documented the day on video. The Manhattan wedding videographer heard stories of loss, devastation and even some of hope from the people of Rockaway, New York.
A Samurai sword-wielding Mormon bishop helped a neighbor woman escape a Tuesday morning attack by a man who had been stalking her. Kent Hendrix woke up Tuesday to his teenage son pounding on his bedroom door and telling him somebody was being mugged in front of their house. The 47-year-old father of six rushed out the door and grabbed the weapon closest to him — a 29-inch high carbon steel Samurai sword.
With the announcement of two new temples, groundbreakings for two others and a number of interesting developments at still others, the establishment and reach of sacred temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continued to grow and expand around the world during the past six months.
When our daughter, Michaela, was in the MTC in Johannesburg, South Africa two months ago, we thought something was quite mysterious. Almost every other missionary with her was from Zimbabwe. Not only that, they seemed to know each other like high school friends who shared the same stories.
Four members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints advanced past the battle round on "The Voice" this week. Team Usher's Ryan Innes and Team Adam's Amy Whitcomb as well as Jon Peter Lewis and Ryan Hayes from the duo Midas Whale survived the battle round on NBC's talent show.
