Mormon temples: An answer to a rabbi’s question

In his thoughtful letter to the editor of The Jewish Week, Rabbi Mordecai Schnaidman poses three serious questions about LDS beliefs. He asks them in the context of determining whether Mitt Romney’s faith should render him unsuitable for the presidency. This is not a political blog, and I have no interest in advocating Mitt’s candidacy here. However, I think the rabbi’s questions merit honest answers, and I’d like to offer some in the next two posts. In doing so, I recognize that clarity often trumps agreement in matters of theology.

Sister Patricia T. Holland passes away at age 81

Patricia Terry Holland, wife of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023, after a brief hospitalization. She was 81.

19: “Holiness to the Lord” (Exodus 35–40; Leviticus 1; 16; 19)

What do you say when someone asks you to do something difficult? Do you sometimes give a noncommittal maybe? Or do you sometimes say yes, but secretly mean no? In this week’s lesson of Exodus 35–40 and Leviticus 1, 16, and 19, we’ll see how the Israelites responded when the Lord asked them to do something difficult, and what we can learn from their response.

31: "Thou Art Come … for Such a Time as This" (Esther)

Here’s a fun fact: did you know that the name Esther means star in Persian? And when you consider Esther’s story in the Old Testament, there’s obviously no coincidence that one of the greatest biblical heroines was given that name. In fact, as we study this incredible book of scripture this week, we’re going to see how brightly Esther shined in the midst of terrible adversity. Not only was she incredibly brave even when faced with death, but she also had an enduring faith in Jesus Christ that ultimately led to the salvation of an entire nation.

3: “We Have Come to Worship Him” (Matthew 2, Luke 2)

If you’re like us, now that the new year has begun you might be experiencing holiday withdrawals. But what if we told you that Christmas can keep on going? Luckily, this week’s Come, Follow Me lets us revisit the story of the Savior’s birth in the second chapters of Luke and Matthew. In these verses, we learn of early witnesses of Christ from the shepherds to the wise men from afar who recognized that this baby boy was called to an important work. So let’s start out the new year by studying this miraculous story and bringing the Savior into the season and into our hearts once again.

21: “Behold, Thy King Cometh” (Matthew 21–23; Mark 11; Luke 19–20; John 12)

What would it have been like to shout “Hosanna” as Christ rode into Jerusalem? Can’t you just picture the palm leaves and feel the excitement as the Savior rode into the city as King? While we can’t know everything that happened during Holy Week, we can imagine being there as we carefully study what took place before the Crucifixion and Resurrection and learn from the sermons Jesus taught. This week, as we read Matthew 21–23; Mark 11; Luke 19–20; and John 12, we’ll start out with the Savior on that road He traveled—and the journey is going to be glorious.

Brooke Snow: Christ is the Breath of Life

After having her baby, Brooke Snow's health started declining and she was life-flighted in a helicopter. But when the reserve of oxygen on the helicopter ran out, Snow recalls feeling a distinct prompting that literally saved her life.
