The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square shared a moving “Spoken Word” tribute to the late British monarch, emphasizing her faith, grace, and goodness.
If there is such a thing as a conventional LDS family, mine was certainly not it. My father joined the church when he was 18, along with his brother Dennis and sister Bonnie. He has been very active and has served in many church callings throughout his life, including everything from being a counselor in the bishopric and Young Men organization to serving as a ward mission leader. My dad is both devoted and faithful.
The title of this blog may perhaps be a bit flip. It’s a book-sized testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by one of its more prominent members, Utah’s senior-citizen senator, Sen. Orrin Hatch. Published by a small bookseller, Cedar Fort Publishing, Hatch acknowledges that it’s a “short primer” designed for investigators, new converts, missionaries, young people and persons interested in learning about his faith’s history. While it’s likely destined for a longer shelf life at Deseret Industries than Deseret Book, there is a certain sweetness and sincerity in Hatch’s “An American, a Mormon and a Christian — My Basic Beliefs.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) is a global faith with more members outside the United States than inside. Another sign of the Church’s worldwide reach came 27 May as Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles organized the Hyderabad India Stake — India’s first stake.A stake is an administrative unit composed of numerous congregations (called wards and branches) within a geographic area (similar to what other faiths might call a diocese). The Church operates 2,946 stakes worldwide.
The Mormon Church is pushing back against the notion that members of the faith are taught they'll get their own planet in the afterlife, a misconception popularized in pop culture most recently by the Broadway show "The Book of Mormon."
There has been heated speculation about what it will mean to have a Mormon in the White House. Because Mormons believe their “president” — the head of their Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — is God’s prophet on earth, will a Mormon president of the United States be bound to obey whatever this man says? Again, Americans do not seem much astir about such things. Even so, with these concerns laid aside, many voters might not recognize an often undervalued feature of the faith: How it might help a Mormon lead in the Oval Office. This possibility arises from the emphasis the faith places upon patriotism, civic duty and morality in government — American government in particular.
Merrill Osmond has celebrated more than 50 years in the world of show business. Osmond, the lead voice of the Osmond family, is also an established solo artist, writer, producer, motivational speaker and philanthropist. He co-founded the Children’s Miracle Network, currently one of the largest children’s charities in the world that has raised more than $4 billion for children’s hospitals to date. Osmond is the co-author of the novel, "Faith, Hope and Gravity," along with Shirley Bahlmann.
Faith and professional sports have been in the public eye recently with Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow kneeling, bowing his head and praying before games. Many professional sports teams have faith nights for the Jewish community, Catholics and Mormons, among others.
Donny Osmond, his wife, Debbie, and sons Chris and Josh visited the historic Mormon sites in Nauvoo and Carthage, Ill., recently on their way home. In Carthage, the Osmond family stood in a dimly lit room in the Carthage Jail where Mormon prophet Joseph Smith was imprisoned.
Religious scholars and historians gathered at the annual Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research conference on Aug. 1-2, giving presentations ranging from Book of Mormon geography to Joseph Smith's role in the Second Great Awakening to the original context of the First Vision. Additionally, faith and doubt were common themes at the conference, which addresses issues "that are sometimes challenging to testimonies and faith," according to the FAIR website.
