When I stumbled upon this scripture last year, I was intrigued by one word: more.
Imagine this: You’re sitting at home, discouraged, with your phone in one hand and a consoling carton of ice cream in the other when a video headline on your newsfeed catches your attention. It says, “Watch This: Amputee Defeats All Odds and Rock Climbs Again!” Fascinated, you press play, and a story of strength, loss, and victory flashes before your eyes as this person overcomes all odds to reach his goal.
Continuing a pattern that has existed since the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leaders from around the world gathered April 4 and 5, 2019, on Temple Square in Salt Lake City to receive instruction from senior leaders of the Church and to learn from one another. The meetings began Thursday with instruction from the First Presidency, and continued Friday with teaching from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Presiding Bishopric and presidents of the Church’s organizations for women, men, youth and children. This gathering included more than 300 leaders from every area of the world.
“I’ve got something really important to talk to you about,” said our missionary in Brazil last Monday on our video call.
In the introduction to this lesson, President Hinckley talks about the fellowship and unity we ought to have with those not of our faith. Here is the quote:
When I started working at the temple two years ago, I had no idea I was going to instantly acquire 30 or more adorable mothers and grandmothers, whom I love. They marvel over my “young memory;” set me up on dates with their nephews, grandsons, and neighbors; impart of their wisdom; and constantly remind me what a blessing it is to be working at the temple. “It’s so nice to see young people in the temple!” and “I never even thought about working here at your age!” are phrases I hear regularly.
In 2 Nephi 31:12, the Lord admonishes us to “follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do.” This admonition is especially important for leaders of the Church, who represent Him as they perform His work on the earth today.
This conference has been inspiring and uplifting in so many ways. From the announcement about the new home-study programto the announcement of 12 new temples, this weekend has been incredibly spiritual.
More and more it seems the Church and our leaders are focusing on simplifying programs, meetings, and reports to focus on the core of the gospel. To me, the overall message seems to be that, no matter our age, we won't be babied or shepherded through membership in the Church. Instead, we have the opportunity to embrace our discipleship, rely on our Savior and receive His grace, and pursue exaltation and the divinity within us, with the loving support of the Church and its members behind us to catch us when we fall.
