He said, “First, one seeks to become an artist by training the hand. Then one finds it is the eye that needs improving. Later one learns it is the mind that wants developing, only to find that the ultimate quest of the artist is in the spirit.”
It can be easy for us to separate versions of ourselves, depending with whose company we are in or the place we are inhabiting. This seems to be true, even more so, regarding the different ways we present ourselves in places of worship and academia, respectively.

As a mental health professional whose desire is to help people with mental health concerns, I was dismayed by some of the feedback I received publicly and privately about a recent article of mine that was shared on LDS Living.
This morning, in a deal that shocked the sports world, the Miller family agreed to sell the Utah Jazz to Qualtrics founder and CEO Ryan Smith for $1.6 billion. Smith already has experience working with the Jazz, as he co-founded “5 For the Fight,” the non-profit organization that sponsors the patch on the Jazz uniforms and encourages everyone to give just $5 in the fight against cancer.
Not long after my mission, I found myself drawn back to my native alienation. It’s been a constant struggle for me to inhabit the world of people. I’ve had moments, even months, of warm clarity of vision. But then I have receded again into my natural state, bondage to some vision of my own power and priority. My wife and then my children, in company with others who have loved me, have slowly made me more open and tender—even loving. By the time I was in my thirties, I still struggled with the nagging sense that I was by nature a misanthrope. But there were people in my life whom I loved, and I could generally be kind to the rest, as long as I remembered to work at it.
Another batch of updates was published today, December 18, 2020, to the Church’s General Handbook for leaders and members. Six more chapters have been rewritten, and sections of 11 other chapters were added or revised. The text is available to the public in English online and in the Gospel Library app. Versions in other languages will follow in coming months.
