It is a huge and awesome responsibility to watch over missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While serving our mission in Georgia, one of my cherished opportunities was to help with their health and medical needs, like their own mother would. Whether dealing with sinus infections, bronchitis, dehydration or the common cold and sore throat, you hoped the best for them, knowing they need to be healthy to work effectively. We worked closely with amazing mission doctors and missionary medical nurses, and I learned a lot. In fact, my husband affectionately started calling me, “Sister King: Medicine Woman.” But not every illness was a common one. And sometimes, the unexpected happened — despite all the talk and training about health and safety. I can’t even imagine being on the receiving end of the phone call made to a mission president 14 years ago, when two LDS elders were kidnapped in Russia.

Debra Bonner didn’t know she could sing and she didn’t know Jesus until a friend invited her to church when she was 13 years old. Since then, she has spent her life singing the good news of a Savior while instilling a love for Him in her eight children and to all within the sound of her voice.

In the Sunday morning session of the October 2020 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson issued a challenge:

Moses, Nephi, and Joseph Smith are all names on the page for us today. But their struggles and faith were real. And we can learn from their lessons.

When the Tillotson's decided to leave their home behind to travel the world, they knew they would need a nanny to help them with their small children, but they didn't know the job would receive more than 24,000 applicants. However, after looking through the applicants, they managed to narrow the list down to just one.

What a beautiful story of how hope can provide us with healing that reaches beyond the physical.

Are we allowed to choose a favorite Christmas symbol? It’s almost as tricky as picking a favorite general authority, scripture, or hymn. Nevertheless, I choose poinsettias. I love the vivid green and red colors that surround us each December. I even love poinsettias when they are white, pink, or marbled. Most of all, I love the legend of how we got poinsettias in the first place.

Tara Bench, perhaps best known as Tara Teaspoon, was still a student at Utah State University when she flew out to New York City for a cooking interview with Martha Stewart Living. The interview didn’t go great and as Tara recalls she “messed up a lot.” But at the end of the day she assured those interviewing her that she was a fast learner. She got the internship and started at the bottom of the barrel in the Martha Stewart test kitchen running errands and going to the grocery store for last minute ingredients but when her internship was over, they offered her a position as “recipe developer.”
