In a Republican presidential campaign marked by controversies over birth control, moon bases and the proper means of transporting a dog, it was perhaps inevitable that incantations spoken on behalf of the dead would get their turn: In a gesture widely covered by the U.S. media, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel has called on Mitt Romney to denounce the Mormon practice of posthumously baptizing non-Mormons - Jewish Holocaust victims, in particular. Here in Canada, former Canadian Jewish Congress president Bernie Farber is publicizing the issue. In a column (see above), he writes that, "the effort at posthumous conversion stings our collective Jewish soul."
This Halloween a lot of people will be dressing up as Mormons. In fact, being a Mormon missionary for Halloween made Time magazine's top ten topical costume list. The magazine says its a great way to tap into the 2011 Mormon phenomenon. Plus, the editors say its easy to do. The magazine even provides a checklist: White shirt, Necktie, Name tag, Book of Mormon, Slacks and Bike helmet (which is optional). However, not everyone likes the idea of a missionary costume. Sue Perdue said, "It would be like dressing up as a Muslim - I think it would be in bad taste."
Mormon Helping Hands is teaming up with Foodbank of Santa Barbara County and the 5Cities Homeless Coalition to stock the two organization’s shelves with food and much-needed first-aid supplies this weekend. He was a big man who could handle the ball long before LeBron James took the court. Cougar fans flooded the Marriott Center to see him long before the start of Jimmermania. Kresimir Cosic had it all. He was a 6-foot-11 center who had the ability to dribble the ball and entertain a crowd. But one friend he made in Provo, a man who may have know the basketball star as well as anyone, never attended a game played by the famous Yugoslavian native.

It is there, and it creeps up like a silent killer. Maybe it is the wet underwear that you found floating in the hallway bathroom. Or the cat food that has been flung out on the floor like tiny marbles waiting to trip up a passerby. Or the loud thumping and yelling and tantruming as if we live in some sort of primal age where roaring and beating your chest were the only way to get other’s attention.

A successful second round of donations for the Adopt-A-Vet program this weekend put Compassionate Houston’s goal of 300 welcome home baskets in 100 days within reach. Compassionate Houston is a coalition of faith-based organizations and private citizens. Their goal is to provide a place to stay, social services and job assistance for chronically homeless veterans in the Houston area. Linda Andrus, project director for Compassionate Houston, organized the basket initiative when told that veterans were receiving much appreciated housing, but lacked the basic household supplies to make it a home. Though told it might take a year to collect the necessities for 300 veterans, “We just knew we could do it in 100 days,” Andrus stated.
An article in the New York Times on Thursday, Sept. 8, made me laugh out loud when I read it. The story, written by reporter Pete Thamel, explains that in recent decades of college football, the euphemism, “Little Sisters of the Poor,” has been used to describe a super weak opponent.
