When my friend told her father that she was seriously considering marrying a young man who didn’t serve a mission, his jaw dropped. Her father harbored some justified concerns about this young man she had fallen in love with. But in this case (like in many other cases), he had changed his ways and was ready for an eternal commitment to the Lord—and to her. This example is just one of many where that old stigma catches up with us: the assumption that “non-RM” young men may be less worthy or ready for the blessings of a temple marriage.

A year or so ago I was teaching a young women lesson about modesty. One of the Mia Maids asked if leggings were considered modest. This was only a tad awkward because there was a girl in the class wearing leggings under her miniskirt. I said something like, “When wondering if something is modest, ask yourself if you would feel comfortable if the prophet walked in the room.” I know, totally a mom answer.

Doug Halladay, a former missionary who served in Germany, was going through his mission photos and slides and came across this photo of a very young Dieter and Harriet Uchtdorf in Berlin. Mr. Halladay sent it to President Uchtdorf’s office in Salt Lake City, and the picture was promptly sent to Deseret Book Publishing in order to be included in President Uchtdorf’s book,
