Why It's Okay to Admit I'm Struggling Being Faithful Today

Yup, that’s me in the above picture raising my hand. I too, struggle with being faithful. I wish my personal life looked like so many other lives portrayed on social media or even in Sunday School class as extremely happy and valiant and active members of the gospel.

Few things could have been more discouraging for the early Saints than the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. But although it was a somber time in Church history, the Saints showed remarkable perseverance and faith in the Lord. This week we dig into Doctrine and Covenants 135–136 to put the martyrdom in context as well as look at thoughts from early Saints that will help us see how we too can persevere through our darkest moments.

GOP rivals have different takes on Mormon faith

Republican presidential primary rivals Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman are both Mormons whose ancestral roots run deep into the church’s pioneer history - intertwining, in fact, several generations back. Relatives of both men have served near the top of Mormonism’s global hierarchy. But in public remarks they have drawn strikingly different religious self-portraits. Romney is highly active and orthodox - he was a top local lay leader in Massachusetts for years, and he has embraced his church unequivocally: “I believe in my Mormon faith and endeavor to live by it,’’ he said in a major speech in 2007.

Wrongly convicted man says he walked out of prison a better person, talks about faith

For Utah resident Ted White, the past 13 years of his life have been like being on a treadmill. “You think it’s over, and then it’s not over." He spent five years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He went through three trials and to several courts to get his conviction overturned. “I think proving conspiracy is very difficult to do, and we were able to do that with a jury of my peers that heard the evidence,” he said.

There are many things a missionary has to worry about when returning home from two-year service for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: going back to school, finding a job, catching up with friends and getting back into shape, to name a few.

Study: Fathers are largest determiner in children's faith

I am afraid that our culture in general has reduced the role of fatherhood (along with marriage itself) to something nonessential or unnecessary. Even many men today regard parenting as being primarily the mother’s role and no longer associated with masculinity or real manhood, especially when it comes to spiritual formation. Instead, many have succumbed to modern caricatures — encouraged by feminist psychology — and the primitive role of hunter-gatherer, and thus assume that this is their main contribution to the family. As a result too many men, including professing Christian men, express their role as father exclusively in terms of financial provider. The fact is children are not looking for financial provision; they are looking for love, guidance, and a role model for what it means to be a man.
