About the author: Helen Moenoa from Honolulu, Hawaii graduated in July 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in applied business management from BYU-Idaho, supported by BYU-Pathway Worldwide.

My higher education journey began in 1990 at BYU–Hawaii. I took a break to serve a mission and upon returning home, life got in the way of my educational goals. I had always had the intention and desire to return and finish my degree, however, work, church, and family responsibilities took priority. Ten years ago, in 2013, I was diagnosed with cancer. At first I thought my dream of earning a degree would never come to fruition, but I kept seeing and hearing about BYU-Pathway. In 2019, a few coworkers started taking BYU-Pathway courses online. I joined the semester after and have loved every minute.
Even so, pursuing my education didn’t come without sacrifices. With a full-time job, my church calling, and frequent doctor appointments, I had to block out time during the night to do my assignments. My husband and I had to budget carefully and limit all extra activities. But when I look back, the sacrifices my family made so that I could go back to school pale in comparison to the blessings of strength, unity, and testimony we’ve received.

BYU-Pathway taught me how to change my mindset, set and accomplish goals, learn online, and manage my time. Even more so, BYU-Pathway helped me develop as a disciple leader. I learned how to build meaningful connections at work and in my home. I’ve persevered through difficult conditions, helped others expand their influence for good, and deepened my conversion to Jesus Christ.
After completing my PathwayConnect foundational courses, I realized achieving my goal of earning a degree was possible. PathwayConnect eased me back into school which set me up for success. Completing my degree online through BYU-Pathway allowed me to attend school at a fraction of the cost and graduate without needing to take out any loans.
I still fight the effects of cancer, but my education has taught me my limits are far beyond what I thought they were. While on this journey to attain my bachelor’s degree in applied business management, I’ve realized that I want to keep going. I’m now preparing to go to law school to study contract law. As my BYU-Pathway and BYU-Idaho journey comes to a close, I am excited for my loved ones and everyone who decides to better their lives and those around them through education.
