This week, the Church opened ticketing for the Salt Lake Temple Open House tours.
In only a day, the first one million spots were reserved. These tickets went fast—250,000 were booked within 30 minutes of the initial batch’s release.
But don’t worry if you haven’t grabbed your spot yet. The open house will run for six months—from April 5 to October 1, 2027—and more reservations will become available through future ticket releases. The Church anticipates that at least four to five million visitors will participate in total.
Here are three more exciting stats about the upcoming Salt Lake Temple Celebration.
1. The tour will be offered in multiple languages and with accommodations.
Languages offered for in-person tours include English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and American Sign Language. There will also be options for those who are neurodivergent, blind, or have low vision.
Starting April 5, 2027, there will be two virtual options: a guided tour and a self-guided discovery tour.
“The Salt Lake Temple Celebration is not just for those who live nearby,” Elder Gary E. Stevenson affirmed. “This is a worldwide celebration. It’s something that is going to be celebrated in every corner of the world. It has great meaning and purpose.”
2. The last time people publicly toured the Salt Lake Temple will have been 134 years ago.
The Salt Lake Temple’s first open house took place in April 1893. Approximately 5,000 people toured the temple before it was dedicated, according to reports by local press.
In a journal entry, President George Q. Cannon shared the following about inviting those who opposed the Church to tour the temple:
“At five o’clock last evening quite a number of prominent outsiders went through the Temple, and they were filled with admiration at its beauty and so expressed themselves. ... We felt that permitting these people to go through would have a good effect upon their minds.”
3. The Salt Lake Temple weighs about 10 times the Eiffel Tower.
The Salt Lake Temple weighs about 187 million pounds, or about 100,000 tons. According to President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, this approximately equals:
- 10 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France
- 250 Boeing 747 airplanes, fully loaded
- 1 million people
- 15,000 African elephants
A stronger foundation now supports the temple’s weight. This system consists of nearly 100 base isolators, which would allow the building to move five feet in any direction during an earthquake.
