The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

At the closing devotional for the 2025 Utah Area Young Single Adult Conference, President Jeffrey R. Holland spoke about “pivotal moments from [his] youth” that brought him closer to Jesus Christ.

“I consider my young adult years as part of my youth. Everyone is younger than I am, so the title fits however I want to apply it,” the 84-year-old Apostle joked. “I have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, so I don’t have a lot of talks left to give.”

Here are 10 pieces of advice he shared about centering your life on the Savior.

1. Make This Year Better than the Last

“In this Church, we believe in consistent, calculated, eternal progress, and for the decade-and-a-half of your young adult years, … mission or not, school or not, employment or not, it means that you will be better this year than last year. And next year, you will be better than this year.”

2. Exemplify Eternal Progression

“I hope you, as young adults, will set the kind of example in your spirit of improvement, that if my grandchildren saw you—today, a year after your mission, 5 years after your mission—they would say, ‘I want to be like that.’

“I want you to do it for my grandchildren and for the rest of the children and youth in the Church who will be watching.”

3. Count on Revelation

“If you’re trying to draw close to the Savior and you have a relationship started with your Father in Heaven and you’re striving to improve every year, you can count on revelation to guide you. I cannot tell you exactly how it will come, but it will come. ...

“Be strong, be patient, stay the task, keep your head up.”

4. Learn as Much as You Can

“We have to learn everything we can for the benefit of our spouse, our children, our communities, and the Church. We owe it to the great causes of life still before us that we get as much learning as we can get, for as long as we can get it.”

5. Pursue Your Strengths

“Find your strengths, find your talents, and pursue their strengths. And don’t say you don’t have any, because you do. It’s doctrine in this Church that every single, solitary one of us has a gift and sometimes, many gifts. Pursue your strengths and decide what you want to do. Your future will unfold before you.”

6. Elevate Your Soul with Education

“All forms of education are part of the gospel plan to elevate the soul and improve one’s personal life.”

7. Study the Syllabus That Never Grows Old

“Be a learner. Know how to do things. Know that, especially in pursuing the work and the will of the Lord, the scriptures and the words of the prophets provide a syllabus that never grows old.”

8. Honor Your Most Important Friendship

“As you draw closer to Christ—He who is your ultimate companion, friend, and exemplar—our Father in Heaven will someday, somewhere, in some way, lead you to the most important friend you will ever meet and the most permanently influential mortal figure you will have in time or eternity. That is the person you will marry.”

9. Come Closer to Christ as a Couple

“Your ideal friendship—should you have one—will be enhanced dramatically as you keep trying to come to Christ, progress you make first alone, then next as a couple, even if it means waiting for a long time to find this partner and see the power of a righteous marriage in action.”

10. Remember the Giver of Every Good Gift

“I bear witness of Him, the living Son of the living God, the Alpha and Omega of our lives, the Framer of heaven and earth, who through His Atonement and unfailing obedience to the Father, makes our dreams a reality. His gifts can also intensify the momentum we already have as we strive to come closer to Him in this present hour.”

Among the many names of Christ is the Day Star—the sun—that “shineth in a dark place until the day dawn ... in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19). Our lives will have difficult periods, which may go on for days, months, or even years. But in all of it, somehow, not only when He comes again but also during the anticipation of His coming, we can rest assured that His light will guide us unfailingly through. This book by Jeffrey R. Holland reminds us of the promise that, if we wait for it and watch for it and want it badly enough, our Day Star will most certainly arise in our hearts.
