In a recent social media video, President Jeffrey R. Holland answered some common questions about the last days, including:

  • How do we keep our children safe and calm?
  • How do we stay calm?
  • How do we find peace?
  • Where do we go if there’s chaos?

The Apostle acknowledged that today’s world is characterized by significant social, political, and economic chaos. But he emphasized that the Lord will help us navigate these unique challenges and ultimately find peace.

To illustrate these principles, he turned to a few of his favorite scriptures from the Doctrine and Covenants.

“Let Your Hearts Be Comforted”

First, President Holland read Doctrine and Covenants 101:16:

“Let your hearts be comforted concerning Zion; for all flesh is in mine hands; be still and know that I am God.”

He noted that the Lord repeats the phrase “be still and know that I am God” throughout the scriptures, particularly in the Doctrine and Covenants and the Old Testament.

“So, it’s going to be OK,” he reassured. “Don’t worry. Be still and know that God is God and all flesh is in His hands.”

“They That Have Been Scattered Shall Be Gathered”

President Holland then discussed the Lord’s other promises found in the section, including verse 13: “They that have been scattered shall be gathered” (verse 13).

He clarified that today, we don’t need to think of “the scattering” in these verses as being in different physical locations. “We don’t say that a certain place is Zion in this day and age,” he said. “We talk about Zion wherever there are righteous people and wherever there is a priesthood, a governance.”

Although our families face different kinds of scattering in today’s world—such as social, familial, and economic scatterings—the Apostle explained that the Lord promises to gather our children:

“If your children are scattered emotionally or any other way within the family, they’ll be gathered. … Your children are not only going to be gathered, but they will sing ‘songs of everlasting joy’ in a unified family to claim one’s inheritance, your stewardship in the kingdom.”

Stay on the Watchtower

How do we stay safe and calm before this ultimate gathering? President Holland explains that spiritual refuge lies in striving to be in holy places—remaining within the safety of our covenants, ordinances, temples, stakes, wards, families, and the teachings of scriptures and prophetic leaders.

“Everybody’s going to be gathered [who] have been scattered, and everybody’s going to be able to sing songs of everlasting joy,” he affirmed. “Stay on the watchtower. Be pure in heart, and be peaceful.”
