In 2018, Church members around the world answered a call to submit original hymns and children’s songs for a revision to Hymns and the Children’s Songbook.
How far away is the publication of the new music books? According to an update in the November 2020 Ensign, the process will take several years.
“More than 16,000 music submissions were received from members in 66 countries,” the article reads. “These original hymns and songs are being reviewed blindly in multiple rounds by an international group of talented members and by the revision committees at Church headquarters.”
The article also explains that nearly 50,000 members responded to a feedback survey regarding current sacred music and suggested selections from other faiths being considered for inclusion.
In the June 2018 press release, Elder Ronald A. Rasband said, “We recognize the power that sacred music has to unify the members of the Church throughout the world. We desire to offer a consistent core collection of hymns and songs in every language that reflects the diverse needs of the global Church in our day.”
