4 journaling ideas to help you grow spiritually

How did the prophet Nephi grow through his challenges? There are many beautiful answers to that question. But here is perhaps one. Nephi tells us, “I write the things of my soul.”

When in your own wilderness, take a page from Nephi’s book—grow through it by writing through it. Here are a few journaling ideas to get you started and some of our favorite journals.

Record What Resonates

How to do it: Copy down quotes or lyrics that resonate with you right now. You don’t have to explain why, simply write the lines down.

Why it works: Writing engages more parts of your brain, deepening your understanding. Keeping a record of what resonates will also help you see more clearly how God is speaking to you.

Write on the Go

How to do it: Don’t restrict journaling to sitting at a quiet desk with the perfect pen at the perfect time. Instead, keep a small journal with you and write a sentence here, a sentence there.

Why it works: On-the-go journaling will ground and calm you during stressful moments. It will also help you catch thoughts and ideas that come throughout the day.

Follow a Guide

How to do it: Following a writing prompt goes a long way! Use the one in this journal to help recall, recognize, and record spiritual experiences.

Why it works: When we write down how and when God interacts with us, we begin to see Him more.

Write to the Light

How to do it: When your mind is spinning with worries, slow it down through journaling. Don’t judge yourself, just write what comes.

Why it works: When you write, your brain stops racing ahead. You complete a thought and move on to the next one, rather than thinking in stressful circles.
