In the 2020 Mission Leadership Seminar, Elder Neil L. Andersen taught how important unity in missionary work is, provided practical advice for mission presidents on working with stake presidents, and discussed the power that comes with a setting apart.

Church News reported that Elder Andersen told new mission presidents that a great spiritual adventure awaits them in the field, and that they can expect miracles as they strive to “be one” with missionaries and members.

“I know that each of you desire to ‘be one’ not only with the missionaries but also with priesthood leaders and the members in the wards and branches,” he said. “Yet I warn you: It does not come easily. It requires love, persistence, extraordinary effort, patience, and the blessings of heaven. You will find your noble efforts pulled in many directions.”

Elder Andersen told of one mission president who emailed stake presidents before each transfer to ask about special needs in the stake. He then took their needs into account when assigning missionaries to different areas. Once transfers were complete, the mission president would follow up with the stake presidents to let them know what he had done to try and address their concerns.

He also reminded mission presidents that one of the most important tools they have for creating unity is the divinely given authority they have through their calling.

“Through the Lord’s ordained servants, His glory, His authority, has been given to you,” concluded Elder Andersen. “Your ability to garner the trust and lift the work is not just in your past experience and training, it is in your setting apart, it is in your keys. Use that authority, those keys that have been given you to bless the members as they find their way in sharing the gospel.”
