Sister Elaine Dalton, general Young Women president, recently published a book entitled A Return to Virtue. I'm working as her publicist right now and am thrilled to get to interact with her on a somewhat regular basis.

Utah isn’t the only state with recent access to movies the LDS culture might appreciate. Excel Entertainment, a division of Deseret Book Company, is working quickly to keep up with the significant demand from multiple theater managers in cities across the nation who want to show the entertainment group’s most recently released movie.

Question: When did tan skin become the “in” thing? Can you pin a date or time period on it? Chinese women do everything they can to cover their skin when walking outside; most American women do everything they can to uncover their skin while in the sun. True, I think most of us will agree when I say we love the sun. I haven’t seen much of it lately (thanks a lot, Utah), but I’m confident it will show its pretty little face sometime soon. But with that happy sun, comes a little “Debby-Downer.” I’ll secretly admit to you that I’m always a little depressed when I read the medical reports my mom sends me about how detrimental the sun is to my skin. Argh. I’m not sure why I keep reading those if they just strike fear in my heart about cancerous moles the size of my head. However, in this instance, I will admit defeat and say, “Mom, you are right.”

Raise your hand if you saw the Lifetime movie based on Prince William and Kate Middleton? I’m totally raising mine right now, and am proud of it! I have no idea why, but I am so ridiculously intrigued by this whole royal wedding thing. Is it the inner girl in me who wishes I could be in Kate’s shoes (and hats), or am I more in love with Prince William than I thought? Either way, I’m giddy for Friday. And for what it’s worth, the actor who played Prince William was adorable, but the actress they cast for Kate just didn’t do the real Kate justice. If you didn’t get to see it, here’s the YouTube preview.

No, this isn’t a post about Christmas--if it were, I’d be four months late. Bear with me until I make my point. Every Christmas my mom pulls out her “Christmas books.” I’m not kidding, it’s usually at least one full bookshelf worth of books – picture books for the grandkids to read; Richard Paul Evan’s latest Christmas book (he has one at least every year, doesn’t he?), and books sharing ideas on how to remember Christ during Christmas. The majority of the books on the shelf however, are that last topic: idea books on how to celebrate and remember Christ, despite all the commercialism. Most Americans start celebrating Christmas the day after Thanksgiving; the decorations are usually up in the malls two weeks before that.

As general conference approaches, one item of food specifically comes to mind: Apple-Puffed Pancakes. I’m humming “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof right now, because Apple-Puffed Pancakes are a total general conference breakfast tradition in my family. The only problem with it: there’s never enough. That’s how good it is. No, really. It’s that good. Give them a try this weekend and let me know if they meet your expectations. Enjoy!

I think it was about four years ago while I was in the MTC when I solidified my testimony of the importance of the twelve apostles. One in particular made a huge difference in my life: Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. He spoke to the missionaries in the MTC and gave his moving “Missionary Work and the Atonement” talk. My favorite quote from this speech is:

Saturday mornings growing up always meant a bowl of Cheerios and early-morning cartoons. But then, there were the special days that called for Apple-Puffed Pancakes and another kind of early morning TV: General Conference.

I have a lot of young mothers in my life right now--sister, sisters-in-law, best friends, ward members, and a few co-workers. It’s amazing listening to them talk about how busy their days are--I can only imagine. They are (you are) the sole caretakers of one or more little adults! Of course that is going to keep you busy.

Just over two years ago, I returned home from serving a mission in Frankfurt, Germany. I also have a younger sister serving in the Russia, Moscow mission right now. We’re the only two girls in our immediate and extended families to serve missions, so the points below are things that have mattered most to the two of us in sustaining support from our family while serving the Lord. (Most of these ideas also apply to Elders.)

Here’s the situation: I'm in my kitchen wearing a flowery apron that once belonged to my grandmother, chopping up cooked chicken to put in this mix I was making for the recipe: Baked Creamy Chicken Taquitos. (That's right: baked, not fried.)

A couple of weeks ago, the young women president in my ward asked me to be the guest speaker for the youth etiquette night. You want to know the first thought that ran through my head? “Alright, Ashley. You’ve got this. You’ve had plenty of experience eating (sad thought), so this should be a piece of cake.” (No pun intended. Alright, maybe a little pun intended.)
