There’s a major new statue in the atrium of the Conference Center.
Workers installed “Christ Visits the Americas” six weeks ago but the public got its first look today during the first two sessions of the 196th Semiannual General Conference.
The statue replaces the fountain that previously occupied that space. ...
“It was an opportunity,” said [Bill] Williams, who worked on the original design of the Conference Center, which opened in 2000. “Instead of just replacing the fountain, church leaders decided to follow the words of a prophet and make things more Christ-centered.”
The statue, sculpted by Michael Hall, depicts the Book of Mormon account of Jesus Christ visiting the Americas after his resurrection. The account states that he appeared to a large gathering of people.
