Church Announces Early Releases for Many American and Canadian Missionaries

Editor's note: Additional updates regarding which missionaries will return to their native countries were announced Monday evening at 10 p.m. MDT. Read more here. 

As a "substantial number" of missionaries return home to the United States and Canada, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released information regarding missionary length of service. A matrix sent to stake presidents and detailing the changes was reported by Deseret News:

  • All elders serving in the U.S. and Canada who have served 21 months or more will be released, shortening their missions by three months.
  • All American and Canadian elders returning from serving in other countries due to the pandemic will be released if they have served 18 months.
  • All American and Canadian sisters returning from serving in other countries because of the pandemic will be released if they have served 15 months.
