This week's FHE lesson topic comes from the Come, Follow Mereading inRomans 7-16. Check out this week's Come, Follow Me study ideas on LDS Livingfor additional resources and suggestions.

Thought

“You have agency to choose eternal life by keeping yourself clean and worthy to enter into God’s holy temple and receive the ordinances that will allow you to return to the presence of the Father. You can choose the blessing of eternal life, to live the life that God lives for all eternity with your family. You have the potential to receive all that the Father has. The choice is yours.”

(Shayne M. Bowen, “Agency and Accountability,” Ensign or Liahona, October 2012)

Scripture

“But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members” (Romans 7:12).

Lesson

As suggested in the Come, Follow Me manual, read this excerpt from Elder Shayne M. Bowen:

There is a story told of an old Cherokee teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves. One is evil: he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good: he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you—and inside every other person too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Have each family member draw these two wolves, one that represents evil and one that represents good. Ask, “How do you feel when you feed the good wolf? What about the bad wolf?” Read Romans 7:12 and consider asking family members if they would like to share an experience where they felt an internal struggle between good and evil.

Ask family members to cut out their “good wolf” drawings and tape them to a large mason jar. Tell your family that this week you are going to focus on feeding the “good wolf.” Show them a bag of cotton balls (or any other item that can easily fit in the mason jar) and explain to your family that every time they feed the “good wolves,” they will add a cotton ball to the jar. Next family home evening, if the mason jar is filled and “fed,” then tell your family that you will have a special treat prepared for them. If the mason jar isn’t filled, then the family can continue with this goal until it is.
