One of the largest wildfires on record in Bordeaux, France, has led to the evacuation of more than 250,000 across the region in recent days.
The uncontained wildfire is four times the size of Paris, the Associated Press reported.
Elder Gérald Caussé of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared his condolences in a social media post on July 30: “Having lived much of my life in one of the hardest-hit regions of France, the destruction caused by these fires is deeply personal to me and to many members of my family,” he wrote.
Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lormont, France—just north of the wildfires—quickly opened the local meetinghouse’s doors to accommodate evacuees, transforming it into an emergency reception center. The building provided a place to sleep and meals were brought in on the first few nights following the evacuation order.
“In moments of uncertainty and sorrow, I know we can find peace in the assurance that our loving Heavenly Father is mindful of each of us,” Elder Caussé wrote.
The fire has affected three Latter-day Saint wards and displaced 200 members.
