Lesson

In the scriptures, we can read many beautiful prophecies of the Savior’s birth. In the Old Testament, Isaiah spoke of the child who would be called “Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). In the Book of Mormon, Nephi and Alma prophesied that Christ would come to redeem His people. And in the New Testament, John the Baptist taught that someone greater than himself would come to redeem the people.

All of these prophets taught that Jesus Christ would have a special mission to fulfill. He would be the Savior of the world. He would make it possible for us to overcome sin and death and return to our Father in Heaven. The prophet Alma taught,

And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. (Alma 7:11–12)

Discuss

What did Alma prophesy that the Savior would do?
Why would the Savior do this for us?

Activity

All Ages: Sing your favorite Christmas carols. Think about the words and what they say about the birth of Jesus Christ.

Challenge

It’s nice to give people Christmas gifts, but the most important part of Christmas is remembering the birth of Jesus Christ. This Christmas, give someone a gift centered around Jesus Christ that doesn’t cost money. You could write them a letter with your testimony, make them a handmade gift, or do service for them.
