Thought: “Neither the Bible nor the Book of Mormon in and of themselves is sufficient. Both are necessary for us to teach and learn about the full and complete doctrine of Christ. The need for the other does not diminish either one of them. Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon are necessary for our salvation and exaltation. As President Ezra Taft Benson so powerfully taught, ‘When used together, the Bible and the Book of Mormon confound false doctrines’ (“A New Witness for Christ,” Ensign, Nov. 1984, 8).”

—Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Song: “As I Search the Holy Scriptures,” Hymn #277

Scripture:

Articles of Faith 1:8: “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”

(This would be a good time to teach the family where the Articles of Faith are found in the scriptures, at the conclusion of the Pearl of Great Price.)

•    Show the family copies of the King James Version of the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Explain that the Bible was written in ancient Jerusalem, while the Book of Mormon was written on the American continent; both by inspired prophets and apostles. Explain that we need them both in order to know and understand God’s will and His doctrine.

•    Show everybody where to find the Bible Dictionary and the Topical Guide and Index.

Show the maps and other pictures in the scriptures. Choose a chapter and verse in either volume of scripture that is easy for each member of the family to understand, and that includes a footnote that references the other volume of scripture. Explain what footnotes are and how they help us to understand the scriptures.

•    Testify of the truths found in both volumes of scriptures and how they have changed your life for the better.

Activity:

Play Scripture Charades! Each family member takes a turn acting out a scripture story without using words or sound (they can recruit other family members to participate in the acting as well). The remaining family members guess what the scripture story is and which volume of scripture it comes from.
