Listening the Way We Want to be Listened to

My 10 year-old son loves Legos. He loves building new Lego creations with every piece having some well-planned (although imagined) function. He loves to share in detail how his new Lego model works. So, after recently trying to show me a new Lego creation, he said in complete exasperation “Dad, it’s like you’re listening but you’re not really listening!”

He was right. I was looking in his direction but my focus was far away on the next task on my to-do list.
