Looking for Ways to Serve This Holiday Season? Here Are 30 Easy Service Ideas to Get You Started

The Church's 2016 "Light the World" Christmas campaign encourages everyone to serve in the 25 days leading up to Christmas. However, sometimes it can be a bit tricky to think of new ways to serve. Whether you're looking for daily service projects or ideas for Secret Santa or "Elving" like in the new family Christmas hit, The Christmas Project, here are 30 simple service ideas to get you started:

• Drop off a kind note in secret to someone each day for 12 days before Christmas. • Make holiday cards for nursing home residents and then go give them out. • Babysit for busy parents. • Bring a meal to a friend or neighbor. • Donate toys and clothes to a local donation center. • Buy a bag of healthy groceries and donate it to your local food bank. • Shovel snow or rake leaves for a neighbor. • Volunteer at a local soup kitchen. • Hold the door for people behind you, especially if that person is carrying packages or bags. • Take your neighbor’s trash to the curb while you are taking out yours. • Pay for the person behind you at the drive-thru. • Donate blood to a local donation center. • Help an elderly person off the bus or across the road by taking their • Write a letter or e-mail to a friend or family member to let them know how much you care about them. • Offer your seat on public transportation to someone around you. • Pick a day to smile at everyone you see. • Surprise your unsuspecting spouse with breakfast in bed. • Come up with a list of twenty compliments and then give them out to twenty people throughout the day. • Bring someone a plant or some fresh flowers. • Make your family members or roommate’s bed. • Set the table for dinner. • Pick up trash that someone else dropped. • Call your grandparents and tell them that you love them. • Deliver homemade cookies to a neighbor. • Write a thank-you card to someone. • If you are in a long line, invite the person behind you to go first. • Put sticky notes with positive messages on a public restroom mirror. • Relay an overheard compliment. • Dedicate a song on the radio to someone you know is listening during his or her long commute. • Forgive someone. Repeat as necessary.
