In a recent video, President D. Todd Christofferson answered a question he says he’s often asked: “How have you learned to balance spiritual things and the demands of daily life?” Read his inspiring response below.

1. First, Seek the Kingdom of God

“For me, it’s a matter of keeping the first priority first,” Elder Christofferson says, “… and doing whatever it takes to make that first priority.”

To illustrate his point, he shares two scriptures. First, one from the Savior: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” And another from Jacob in the Book of Mormon: “But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God.”

President Christofferson lists praying, studying the scriptures, and serving in the kingdom of God on the earth as things of highest priority.

“Let’s face it. You don’t have time for everything,” he says. “None of us do. So, you have to put the first priority in place and then see what time and resources you have to add other good things.”

He acknowledges that we won’t even have time for every good thing—and certainly no time for bad things. We need first to do what’s essential and then decide what’s “good, better, best,” as taught by President Dallin H. Oaks.

2. Second, Pray about Your Day

“I begin my day praying about … what I am anticipating, and I pray for each event, each meeting, each event I know is coming,” Elder Christofferson says.

He reassures us that God wants us to “look to [Him] in every thought” and that He wants us to talk to Him about everything that’s going on in our lives.

“So, with some thinking, some planning, and a lot of praying, you can manage,” Elder Christofferson says, “…and still accomplish a lot of good in other fields as you go through life day to day.”
