Sci-fi fans are finally feeling optimistic about a project they've waited more than 20 years to see. When "Ender's Game" hit bookshelves back in 1985, fans of the eventual series started asking themselves, "When are they going to make this into a movie?" Rumors of a film adaptation have circulated since then, and multiple attempts to get the project off the ground have collapsed, many of which included the book's author, Orson Scott Card, as screenwriter.

As speculation escalates about what Mitt Romney will do after his failed presidential bid, outsiders continue to turn to his Mormonism for possible answers. Last November, Bloomberg columnist Albert R. Hunt opined that if Romney didn’t win, he could become LDS Church president instead.

This just shows how much the Church focuses on fulfilling the promises talked about in Doctrine and Covenants 90:11, that "every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language, through those who are ordained unto this power, by the administration of the Comforter, shed forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus Christ."

A 102-year-old time capsule from Utah's State Capitol was cut open recently, revealing many interesting treasures related to the LDS Church. "I have goosebumps," Allyson Gamble, an organizer of the event, said at the unveiling.

How relevant is religion? It’s a question each new generation asks itself. As times change, new circumstances present new challenges and possibilities. And yet, through it all, this immemorial longing we call religion continues on. In the 1960s, sociologists came to a consensus that religion was fading. As knowledge and freedom increased, they theorized, so modern society would outgrow religion. Thirty years later, however, that hypothesis was reversed. One of these sociologists, Peter Berger, explained the miscalculation this way: “Religion has not been declining. On the contrary, in much of the world there has been a veritable explosion of religious faith.”[2] He concluded that just because the world is becoming more modern doesn’t necessarily mean it is becoming less religious. Religion, it can be said, is just as relevant now as it has ever been.

I did something spontaneous a week ago today (Sept. 3, 2013). I am shocked how fast things can spread via social media. And even more surprised how fast the story has changed in just one week. Within 24 hours of my wife and children posting this photo, we were being told it had gone viral. My kids were using terms an old dad like me is not familiar with, such as 70,000 notes on tumblr, favorited on Twitter, re-tweeted, shared etc. Friends were reporting they were seeing it posted on Buzzfeed, Redneck sites and other random sites.

To achieve peace, security and harmony in the world, “we must really mean what we say. We should be sincere about each other’s well-being and in our good intentions towards one another.”

1. The “preface” to the Doctrine and Covenants (section 1) was given only after William E. McLellin, Oliver Cowdery, and Sidney Rigdon attempted to write a preface themselves. Section 1 of the Doctrine and Covenants was revealed in November 1831 at a conference where Joseph Smith and other Church leaders decided to publish Joseph’s revelations as the Book of Commandments. According to William E. McLellin, he, Sidney Rigdon, and Oliver Cowdery were appointed by the conference to write a preface for the publication. When they presented the draft to the conference, the conference participants “picked it all to pieces” and asked Joseph to request a preface from the Lord. Joseph and those at the conference then prayed, after which Joseph dictated the preface “by the Spirit” while “sitting by a window.” According to McLellin, “Joseph would deliver a few sentences and Sydney [Rigdon] would write them down then read them aloud, and if correct, then Joseph would proceed and deliver more.” In this way, McLellin declared, “the preface was given.” Section 1 served as the preface for both the Book of Commandments, whose printing was interrupted in July 1833 by mobs in Jackson County, Missouri, and the Doctrine and Covenants when it was first published in 1835.

Before a crowd of Korean War veterans, Peter Elliott, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recently was honoured by the Republic of Korea for service in restoring and preserving freedom and democracy to that land.
