The angel Moroni statue is an easily recognizable feature on top of temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A reminder of the Restoration, the statue is a way for Latter-day Saints to celebrate a temple’s completion. But did you know that not all angel Moroni statues have looked the same over the years? Church News recently spoke with Emily Utt, historic sites curator for the Church History Department, to learn about the history of the statue and how it has changed.

When the coast-to-coast telegraph was completed in Salt Lake City in October 1861, Brigham Young sent a clear signal to President Abraham Lincoln: “Utah has not seceded but is firm for the Constitution and laws of our once happy country.” Less than eight years later, on May 10, 1869, hundreds gathered at Promontory, Utah, to witness another coast-to-coast completion. The driving of the last spike of the transcontinental railroad reverberated continuity to a once broken nation.1

Among the hallmarks of Ezra Taft Benson 's tenure as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was his stirring summons to reemphasize the Book of Mormon . "My beloved brethren and sisters," he said during the October 1984 general conference, "for some years now I have been deeply concerned that we are not using the Book of Mormon as God intends. As I participated in the Mexico City Temple dedication, I received the distinct impression that God is not pleased with our neglect of the Book of Mormon. In the 84th section of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord decreed that the whole church was under condemnation, even all the children of Zion, because of the way they treated the Book of Mormon. 'And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent,' said the Lord, 'and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon' (Doctrine and Covenants 84:57)."

While the name of The Tabernacle Choir may be different, hitting the No.1 spot on the Billboard charts is nothing new.

Each temple is a house of learning. There we are taught in the Master’s way. His way differs from modes of others. His way is ancient and rich with symbolism. We can learn much by pondering the reality for which each symbol stands. Teachings of the temple are beautifully simple and simply beautiful. They are understood by the humble, yet they can excite the intellect of the brightest minds.
