The Mormon church could stymie efforts to build a $1.5 billion train between South Florida and Orlando International Airport by not allowing tracks on land it once owned. Attorneys for All Aboard Florida, the Coral Gables company behind the train, are trying to decide what to do about the potential problem. On Thursday, they were poring over legal documents related to the property on the south side of the BeachLine Expressway near the airport.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed Saturday that it purchased 6,000 acres of Missouri farmland and three historical sites from the Community of Christ — the group formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “The Church recently acquired operating farmland and several other non-farmland properties located in Missouri and Ohio from the Community of Christ," LDS Church spokesperson Scott Trotter said. "Non-farm sites include the Haun’s Mill and the Far West Burying Ground in Missouri as well as the Joseph Smith Sr. home in Kirtland, Ohio."
More than 300 people were on hand Monday night to blanket a neighborhood in pink ribbons, hoping to convey love and comfort to the family of a young girl tragically killed in the Connecticut elementary school shooting. The family of 6-year-old Emilie Parker lived in Ogden before moving to Newtown, Conn., for a job. She was among those killed Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
One of two men accused of posing as Mormon missionaries and robbing a Las Vegas man has been arrested. The men weren't missionaries. But they were former members of the military and beat a homeowner before stealing his medical marijuana, according to a warrant filed by Las Vegas metro police in Clark County Justice Court.
