Many members of the Church feel a deep connection with the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. As we read their words and listen to them speak twice a year in general conference, we are able to learn from their unique spiritual strengths and distinct teaching styles. Since we are accustomed to seeing Church leaders in spiritual settings, it can be tempting to think of these men only in a spiritual light; however, they are multidimensional people with individual interests and personalities.
By definition, Relief Society is "one size fits all." Its membership is every Latter-day Saint woman over eighteen and mothers under eighteen. But differences among us abound: ages, cultures, occupational status, ethnicity, education, incomes, church involvement, social skills, political beliefs, hobbies and interests . . . and the list goes on! Creating an inclusive, nurturing environment for everyone can be a challenge. But solutions can be found when we apply President Gordon B. Hinckley's formula for involving new Church members: give each sister "a friend, a responsibility, and nurturing with 'the good word of God.'"
Last weekend, my wife, Amy, and I made the trip to Salt Lake City to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Utah Symphony team up with music icon James Taylor for a concert in the LDS Conference Center.
