From biographies to fiction to self-help to children’s books, LDS authors have flooded the market with reflections of their faith. With hundreds of titles published each year, it’s no easy feat to keep up with the best in LDS literature. Here are 12 favorites from the last year to put on your to-read list.

On Sundays, behind the doors of The Biggest Loser ranch and unseen by almost 9.5 million viewers, several contestants of the hit reality television show meet in Moses Kinikini’s bedroom to partake of the sacrament and share their testimonies. Six of the 22 contestants on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” this season are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, namely Moses Kinikini, Kaylee Kinikini, Rulon Gardner, Justin Pope, Sarah Nitta and Denise Hill.

The year 1940 might have been a banner year for our family. The health and financial hardships that followed my father’s 1930 graduation from medical school in Philadelphia were past. The family was happily located in Twin Falls, Idaho, where my father’s medical practice (eye, ear, nose, and throat) was thriving and where he served on the high council of the Twin Falls Stake. In January 1938, he and my mother had returned from his four months of valuable postdoctoral training in ophthalmology in Vienna, Austria, and Cairo, Egypt. After years of sacrifice since their marriage in 1929, my mother could at last contemplate a life of security as the wife of a prosperous physician. In January 1940, son Merrill would be four, and in March, daughter Evelyn would be one. In August 1940, I, their eldest, would be baptized following my eighth birthday.

This week’s Book of Mormon video includes the iconic and powerful teachings in Alma 32 on faith as a seed. It’s such a good chapter full of doctrine and visuals on its own. But there is something about seeing this and the surrounding Alma chapters brought to life in video that has changed them for me. There are so many details about the context of these teachings that are recorded in scripture I forget as I read, and I am reminded of them as I watch the Book of Mormon videos. And some of those details actually make the doctrines even more relevant and relatable in my own life.
