Would you have the strength to stand for your faith despite ridicule and persecution?
Leaving a general conference session a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a demonstrator holding a sign announcing that Joseph Smith had "lied." Now, I don't buy this for a second. The evidence for Joseph's overall sincerity (including his apparent willingness to die for his claims, but also exhibited in his personal papers and letters, which, though never intended for publication, are now being made available to a general audience) is strong and compelling.
An article in today’s CNN Belief Blog emboldened me. For those I am about to offend, I apologize. I hope you will only pass judgement on me, and not upon the other subjects of this article. After a priesthood blessing from her father assured her that no matter what, she would be okay, she continues to fight through her diagnosis with faith.
For as long as Mormonism has existed, people have questioned whether the faith is Christian. Of course, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are quick to point detractors to their first Article of Faith, which says, "We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost." In addition, the Church recently addressed the issue in their Gospel Topics Essays on LDS.org.
On his most crippling days of anxiety, Steve Young described the fear he experienced as an athlete in an interview with CBS: "You wake up and you see the crack of the morning dawn . . . and you would have this dread."
