A tragic yet “largely invisible part of war and conflict” and the resulting refugee crisis is the sexual violence inflicted upon women, said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, an apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Holland addressed a gathering of humanitarians, scholars, faith and government leaders at a conference sponsored by the AMAR Foundation at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom titled “Religious Persecution: The Driver for Forced Migration.”

As much as we love things from the past, sometimes they can look a little dated. The original CTR ring from the 1970’s was great at the time; along with cassette players, perms and platform shoes. We’ve moved on.

The discovery of life beyond Earth would shake up our view of humanity's place in the universe, but it probably wouldn't seriously threaten organized religion, experts say. Religious faith remains strong in much of the world despite scientific advances showing that Earth is not the center of the universe, and that our planet's organisms were not created in their present form but rather evolved over billions of years. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve told BYU-Hawaii’s graduating students that they must get over their insecurities and look to the future with faith. Elder Holland spoke to more than 200 graduates on Saturday, Dec. 17, in commencement exercises held in the Cannon Activities Center on the university’s campus in Laie, Hawaii. “First of all, it is incumbent upon us as students, as Latter-day Saints, and as children of God to see the divine potential in ourselves, to believe in ourselves to know that with God’s help there is quite literally nothing in righteousness that we cannot become,” Elder Holland said. “That is the parable of this school’s history and it ought to be the parable of your history.”
After 30 years of working in film and television in Australia, it was an evening of church music that sent Darran Scott down the path of expressing his faith cinematically. Scott, a relatively new member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- he was baptized eight years ago -- was deeply impacted by the blend of music and spirituality at a ward fireside. "I immediately shelved the project I was developing," Scott said, and started to look for a story that would reflect his religious beliefs.
It’s a “New Year,” a time for thinking about how we might consider adjusting our lives to live with more purpose and meaning. When we live in a world seemingly dominated by negative news coming from every direction, living with faith sufficient to maintain a spirit of hope and optimism can become a non-stop challenge. Looking for more “positives” in our lives, while standing firm in our convictions and beliefs, isn’t an easy task. But when it’s achieved, we can become a more powerful people, filled with mental, physical, and spiritual strength.
