Convention center hosts conference on LDS same-sex attraction
Among the many surprises coming out of the so-called "Mormon moment" was the attention on and interest in homosexual members of the LDS Church. Now, a conference scheduled for Saturday will attempt to navigate that difficult and sometimes contentious topic. The conference, called "Same-sex Attraction: Reconciling Faith and Feelings," will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Provo. According to promotional materials, the event will bring "together a number of people who have experienced same-sex attraction, including several persons who now have successful opposite-sex marriages." The conference promises to explore how those people have "reconciled their challenges and their traditional moral values." It also will include discussions on "sexual orientation change therapy."

Religion scholar Matthew Bowman looked at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – past and present – in The Mormon People: The Making of an American Faith. I recently had the chance to talk with Bowman about his book, the rise of “the Mormon moment,” and what American voters should know about Romney. Here are excerpts of our conversation. Previously you had mainly studied the evangelical Christian church. Why are you now writing about Mormonism?
Malaysian LDS youth love family history
The Malaysian Latter-day Saint youth are model examples of gospel faithfulness. Many youth live in small apartments or terrace homes. Some live in pieced-together wood structures built in areas of Bintulu with no electrical service or waste water systems. They use generators for electricity or candles if necessary for light (generators and gas are expensive). Water is supplied from a network of small hoses fed off a main line from the highway. Water is also stored in barrels. Bathing with water from barrels can be challenging.However, when they show up to Church, they are wearing their Sunday best.
Fox News still doesn't get LDS temples
During an on-air exchange Friday afternoon, Fox News political analyst Juan Williams commented with some intensity about how a person could walk into a black church and see what is going on but he couldn't do that in a Mormon Temple, in essence asking why not? In fairness he’s not the only person who still doesn't understand the distinction between regular churches and temples in the Mormon faith. Hopefully if he did, he wouldn't have been so condemning of the church on national TV.

A woman who traveled the world over, ministering to “the one,” while bringing millions closer to Jesus Christ? Well, let me begin by telling you a little bit about this remarkable woman leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes called the “Mormon Church” by friends of other faiths). Sister Elaine S. Dalton was married to her sweetheart, Stephen E. Dalton, in the Salt Lake Temple. She is the mother of 6 beautiful children (5 sons, 1 daughter), and is the the grandmother of 16 (and counting).
