How This Patriotic Norman Rockwell Painting Was Inspired by Joseph Smith

As the Second World War was raging across the globe and the U.S. was getting sucked into the conflict, artist Norman Rockwell petitioned The Saturday Evening Post for a commission to paint visual representations of four ideals. These fundamental freedoms were identified by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as basic human rights in a speech he delivered to Congress in 1941. He called them the four freedoms: the freedom of speech, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want, and the freedom from fear.

On March 18, 2020, just days after a worldwide pandemic caused many places in the world to shut down, Salt Lake City suffered a 5.7-magnitude earthquake followed by “a series of aftershocks that went on for days,” Sheri Dew recalled in her keynote address for BYU Women’s Conference. Then she shared her own, very personal experience with the unusual challenges of the past 14 months.

44: “A New Spirit Will I Put within You” (Ezekiel 1-48)

So on this week’s episode, we’ll study the first chapter of Matthew and Luke and learn that God knows us so well that He even sent the Savior to “guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79)—and we think that is a path we all want to walk in 2023.
