The Justice Department will begin keeping numbers on hate crimes committed against Sikhs and six other groups, in connection with Monday's one-year anniversary of the killing of six Sikh worshippers in Oak Creek, Wis. Attorney General Eric Holder made the announcement Friday in a blog post, which The Associated Press obtained ahead of its official release. Holder said FBI Director Robert Mueller had approved a recommendation from the agency's advisory policy board to track hate crimes against Sikhs, Hindus, Arabs, Buddhists, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and Orthodox Christians.

LDS Church Contacts Most Missionaries in Philippines; Still Waiting on Some
Some families in Utah Saturday were still anxiously awaiting word about their loved ones who were in the Philippines when Typhoon Haiyan hit the country Friday. A Tooele family has a daughter serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near the city of Tacloban — the area hardest hit by the storm — and as of Saturday afternoon she and dozens of other missionaries remained unaccounted for.

LDS Church announces 58 new missions 'to accommodate influx of missionaries'
This week's issue of the LDS Church News features a list of the 2013 mission president assignments. The list includes 58 new missions, raising the number of missions from 347 to 405.Following President Thomas S. Monson's announcement during the opening session of the October 2012 general conference that the age for missionary service eligibility would be lowered to 18 for young men and 19 for young women, the church saw an immediate increase in missionary applications, bringing the total number of missionaries to more than 60,000 for the first time in years, according to the Church News.

At these annual firesides, the law society bestows its Distinguished Service Award upon a high-profile figure from legal and/or LDS circles. Recent recipients include President James E. Faust, formerly of the LDS Church's First Presidency; President Boyd K. Packer, of the Quorum of the Twelve; and retired Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Church Announces New Online Seminary Option for Youth
“With all the advances in technology in independent study courses, as well as online courses everywhere, we began to have conversations about if there would be a more effective way to help young people in these kinds of situations have a better experience,” said Kelly Haws, an administrator who oversees online seminary. “So we began thinking about ways more students might be able to participate in seminary.”
